OBSESSION Star Inde Navarrette Reportedly Turned Down HEAT 2 and a $2.5 Million Payday for X-MEN

Inde Navarrette has suddenly found herself in the kind of Hollywood position most young actors spend years chasing. After her performance in Obsession, major projects came calling, and apparently she had some pretty wild choices sitting in front of her.

Navarrette ultimately signed on to play Rogue in Marvel Studios' X-Men reboot, but that decision reportedly meant walking away from Michael Mann's Heat 2 and passing on a $2.5 million offer for another horror movie.

That's quite a fork in the road. Navarrette's rise comes after her performance as Nikki Freeman in Curry Barker's indie horror hit. She played both sides of Nikki, from the character under the control of Bear's selfish wish to the glimpses of the real person trapped underneath it all.

That performance helped give the movie its tragic edge, and put Navarrette on Hollywood's radar. It didn't take long for bigger opportunities to follow.

According to Page Six Hollywood, Navarrette had several major offers before choosing X-Men. One of those was the role of Sharlene in Heat 2, Mann's long-awaited follow-up to his 1995 crime classic. The sequel is finally expected to begin filming this fall after years of development.

Navarrette was also reportedly offered $2.5 million to star in a new horror movie directed by Mattias Hoehne, which she turned down as well.

Passing on Heat 2 is particularly interesting because of another actor connected to both projects. Adam Driver had previously been reported as being “deep in negotiations” to play Heat 2 villain Otis Wardell. Driver has since joined X-Men as Mister Sinister, putting him in the same Marvel movie as Navarrette.

That raises an obvious question: Could X-Men also complicate Driver's involvement in Heat 2? Driver was never officially announced for Mann's movie, but being that far along in negotiations usually means things are getting serious.

The schedules might still work in his favor. Heat 2 is currently expected to begin production in November, while X-Men isn't scheduled to start filming until sometime next year ahead of its May 2028 release.

So, Driver could conceivably make both movies. Why Navarrette is apparently no longer pursuing Heat 2 isn't clear. She may simply have decided that jumping directly between two enormous productions wasn't the way she wanted to handle her next career move.

Preparing to take on Rogue is already a major commitment, especially when that character could become a huge part of the MCU for years.

There's also no reported explanation for why she passed on Hoehne's $2.5 million horror offer. After breaking out with Obsession, though, moving away from horror for a while would make sense.

Navarrette has already shown audiences what she can do in the genre. Taking different roles now gives her a chance to expand her filmography rather than immediately becoming associated with one particular kind of movie.

Obsession put her talent on display, and it'll be interesting to see how she handles something completely different.

Still, there are definitely movie fans who would rather see Navarrette working with Mann on Heat 2 than signing a potentially lengthy superhero contract.

Mann is putting together a great cast for the crime epic, with Leonardo DiCaprio and Christian Bale leading the ensemble. After decades of Heat being regarded as one of the great American crime films, the prospect of Mann returning to that world makes the sequel one of the most intriguing projects on the horizon.

From Navarrette's perspective, however, Rogue offers something Heat 2 can't necessarily provide: years of work.

There has been discussion about Mann potentially making Heat 3 and turning the story into a trilogy, but for now Heat 2 stands as a single movie.

Marvel's X-Men, meanwhile, could become the foundation of the MCU's next era. The mutants are widely expected to play a major role in Marvel's plans going forward, which could keep Navarrette playing Rogue for a decade or longer.

That's a massive opportunity for an actor whose career has taken off so quickly. Of course, joining Marvel comes with a tradeoff. Multi-film franchise commitments can eat up huge chunks of an actor's schedule, sometimes making smaller films and filmmaker-driven projects harder to squeeze in.

That's especially interesting in Navarrette's case because Obsession could potentially put her into the awards conversation. There's expected to be a campaign for an Oscar nomination for her performance, and after seeing what she accomplished in Barker's film, plenty of fans will want to see her continue working with different filmmakers in dramatic roles outside the blockbuster machine.

Fortunately, Driver has already demonstrated that those two worlds don't have to be mutually exclusive. While starring in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, Driver still found room for movies such as Silence, BlacKkKlansman, and Marriage Story.

Navarrette could follow a similar path, bouncing between Rogue's superhero adventures and smaller projects that give her completely different material to work with.

For now, though, she has made her choice. A role in Heat 2 and a $2.5 million horror payday are pretty incredible things to walk away from, but playing Rogue could define the next chapter of Navarrette's career.

If Marvel's mutants become as important to the MCU as expected, X-Men isn't simply another big movie for her. It could be the beginning of a very long run.

After what Navarrette pulled off in Obsession, seeing what she does with Rogue should be a lot of fun.
