Quentin Tarantino Has an Axe to Grind with Marvel Movies and Explains Why Marvel Actors Aren't Movie Stars
Quentin Tarantino is talking about the Marvel movies again, and this time he talks about how there aren’t really any movie stars anymore due to the "Marvel-ization of Hollywood." When talking about this, he says that the actors who star in these Marvel movies are not movie stars. While on the 2 Bears 1 Cave podcast, he explained:
"You have all these actors who have become famous playing these characters. But they're not movie stars. Right? Captain America is the star. Or Thor is the star. I mean, I'm not the first person to say that. I think that's been said a zillion times…but it's like, you know, it's these franchise characters that become a star."
Yeah, he’s absolutely right. He goes on to complain a little bit about Marvel movies, saying:
"My only axe to grind against them is they're the only things that seem to be made. And they're the only things that seem to generate any kind of excitement amongst a fan base or even for the studio making them. That's what they're excited about. And so it's just the fact that they are the entire representation of this era of movies right now. There's not really much room for anything else. That's my problem."
You know what, though? I think that excitement is slowly dying off. As someone who has been deep in this fandom space for a long time and lived in the rise of Marvel movies, I am noticing that the excitement isn’t as hardcore as it was before Avengers: Endgame.
While I enjoy watching Marvel movies, the market has become oversaturated, and their projects just aren’t as good as they used to be. They are now a factory pumping out one film and TV series after another, and I think that the care, attention to detail, and even some heart, have been lost in that. I’m not the only one that feels this way.
What do you think about what Tarantino had to say here about Marvel? The filmmaker previously said that he would not direct a Marvel movie because he’s not a hired hand. But if he did make a movie, it would be Sgt. Fury and His Howling Commandos.
