Quentin Tarantino Has Seen The SUSPIRIA Remake and it Made Him Cry
I normally don't get excited about remakes, but Luca Guadagnino‘s remake of Dario Argent's 1977 horror film Suspiria looks so freakin' good! I thought the first trailer that was released was great and there was a terrifyingly grotesque clip that was screened at CinemaCon that you can read about here.
We now have some more hype for the film to share with you. The first comes from the director of the film who said he showed his version of Suspiria to Quentin Tarantino and according to him, it made Tarantino cry. While talking to La Repubblica, the filmmaker said:
"I showed it to Quentin Tarantino. We’ve been friends since our jury duty at the Venice Film Festival. I was nervous but eager to hear his advice. We saw it at his place and his reaction warmed me. He was enthusiastic about it, in the end he was crying and hugged me. Because it’s a horror movie but also a melodrama, my goal was to make you look at the horror without being able to take [your eyes off the screen] because you’re captivated by the characters. Amazon is very happy."
I imagine that it's not an easy task to make Tarantino cry in a movie. He doesn't seem like a crier. So the fact that this movie affected Tarantino like that says something.
Suspiria star Chloe Grace Moretz also talked about the film and offered up some additional praise comparing the film to the films of Stanley Kubrick, specifically mentioning The Shining. During the Provincetown Film Festival earlier this month (via IndieWire) she explained:
"This is a really big statement, but this is the closest to modern Stanley Kubrick I‘ve ever seen. You’re put into a world, which I can only describe it as being like ‘The Shining’ in a lot of ways, where you’re just encompassed in a filmmaker’s brain and you’re just implanted in there, and there’s nothing like it that you will ever see."
As a fan of the films that Kubrick has made, this is great to hear! For those of you who have never seen the original movie, I suggest you check it out before you watch the remake because it's pretty insane. But, this remake looks like it will be even crazier. Here's the synopsis for it:
As a darkness builds at the center of a world-renown dance company, its artistic director (Tilda Swinton), a young American new to the troupe (Johnson), and a grieving psychotherapist (Lutz Ebersdorf) become entangled in a bloody, sighing nightmare.
The remake also stars Tilda Swinton, Dakota Johnson, Mia Goth (A Cure for Wellness) and Jessica Harper of the original film. Suspiria will be released on November 2nd, 2018.
