Rey Skywalker STAR WARS Movie Screenwriter Steven Knight Exits Project
There’s a disturbance in the Force over at Lucasfilm as screenwriter Steven Knight has exited the Star Wars film project he was working on that is set to focus on Daisy Ridley’s Rey Skywalker.
Knight signed onto the project back in 2023, and it was an exciting development because Knight is such a talented writer and it means there was a chance that this movie could actually be good.
There were previous reports that there were issues with Knight completing the script, but they were quickly debunked. There’s no reason given as to why Knight left the project, but I’m sure it will eventually be chalked up to “creative differences.”
But, Knight has also been deep in development on his Peaky Blinders movie, so maybe that’s at least part of the reason.
Prior to Knight’s hiring, Damon Lindelof and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy were initially writing the script for the film, but Lucasfilm didn’t like the direction that they were taking the story, and the studios ended up firing them from the project.
Lucasfilm is now actively talking with other writers to take a crack at the story, which has been said to chronicle Rey’s efforts to start a new Jedi Academy. The film is set over a decade after the events in The Rise of Skywalker, and it will focus on Rey as she builds upon the New Jedi Order.
While Lucasfilm continues to try and figure this Rey Skywalker movie out, director Jon Favreau is currently shooting The Mandalorian and Grogu, which is scheduled to be released on May 2026.
The movie is being directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, who previously directed episodes of 2022’s Disney+ series Ms. Marvel. Are you looking forward to Star Wars: New Jedi Order?
