Damon Lindelof's STAR WARS Script Reportedly Focused on an Elderly Rey with Helen Mirren Wanted in The Role
Some possible new details have been revealed regarding the Star Wars film script that Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson wrote and handed in to Lucasfilm. After they turned in that script, they parted ways with Lucasfilm, and last week Lindelof said that he was actually asked to leave “the Star Wars universe.”
So, what kind of Star Wars story was Lindelof looking to tell that got him booted? Well, according to The Hot Mic podcast's Jeff Sneider, his Rey Skywalker film was originally going to take place 60 years after The Rise of Skywalker, and the studio was looking at possibly casting Helen Mirren as an elderly Rey.
There aren’t any other details to share, but that certainly would have been a very interesting direction to take things. Maybe this would have been the movie Lucasfilm would have made if Daisy Ridley passed on reprising her role in the movie. Maybe when the actress decided to come back, the whole plan changed.
The big Star Wars movie with Rey’s return was announced at Star Wars Celebration, and Lucasfilm CEO Kathleen Kennedy explained the story, saying:
"Well we're 15 years out from Rise of Skywalker, so we're post war, post First Order, and the Jedi are in disarray. There's a lot of discussion around, 'Who are the Jedi? What are they doing? What's the state of the galaxy?' She's attempting to rebuild the Jedi Order, based on the books, based on what she promised Luke, so that's where we're going."
"I don't know as we'll spend a lot of time in flashbacks or Force ghosts or things like that, but certainly, the spirit of what he represents to her is gonna be significant."
It’s also been reported that Rey will not be the lead of the film. It was explained: “Daisy won’t necessarily be the lead. She’ll be like the Luke [Skywalker] or the Obi-Wan [Kenobi] of the situation, and she’ll rebuild the new Jedi Order.” It was also reported that John Boyega is possibly coming back to reprise his role as Finn.
It will be interesting to see what comes of this movie, but what do you all think about Lindelof’s initial story that would center around an elderly version of Rey?
