Robert Downey Jr. Opens Up About His Surprising MCU Return as Doctor Doom

When Avengers: Doomsday was first announced, it came with a twist that no one saw coming. Robert Downey Jr. wasn’t just returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he was stepping into the role of its next major villain, Doctor Victor von Doom.

Now, with the film closing in on its release, Downey Jr. is finally opening up about what pulled him back into the franchise he helped build.

The reveal originally dropped during San Diego Comic-Con 2024, where Marvel Studios mapped out the rest of the Multiverse Saga. Alongside the return of Joe Russo and Anthony Russo to direct the next Avengers installments, the biggest headline was Downey Jr.’s comeback. Only this time, he wouldn’t be playing Tony Stark. He’d be the big bad villain.

That announcement didn’t land smoothly with everyone. Some fans were excited, others questioned whether the whole thing was a gimmick to get fans excited about Marvel movies again.

After a rocky stretch for the franchise and the loss of Kang the Conqueror as its central antagonist, the move was an interesting one. But Downey Jr. insists his return wasn’t about revisiting old glory. It was about doing something new.

Speaking on Bran Ferren’s Conversations for our Daughters, he shared: “And so, again, what he really did was say, I want to go I want to cast against type supposedly because I know that Downey’s as much a Strauss as he is a Tony Stark or whatever.

“So really what it is too is sometimes the universe has this larger perspective and someone says, ‘Hey, guess what? I think you can do this thing that people have never seen you do very well and I’m and I’m betting on it.’ And then you go, ‘Oh s**t.’

“So then there’s that sense of obligation can be the mother of deformity. But I think also appreciation for validation is demonstrated in perspiration. So I worked my ass off to make sure that I was so prepared. Sydney Lumett would have been happy exactly with the way I showed up to set.

“Now I’m dipping my toe back in there but I honestly feel like I’ve I don’t want to say I’ve earned the the right to be able to be granted access where no actor for hire has been.

“But I’ve always had this thing where I’m kind of, even in Chaplain it was about he transitioned from the silent era to talkies or did he? Because really it was but it was all to make The Great Dictator which was possibly the most important statement of his entire artistic career.

“And now having played Tony Stark for all those years, I’m coming back into Marvel again. Without Lewis Strauss and without Nolan’s endorsement, it wouldn’t make as much sense to say, ‘Oh yeah, I’m going to hit that button again, but now I’m going to do it in this genre.’

“But really, what’s interesting to me is digging into what happens backstage at the world, not being afraid of scale.”

Downey Jr.’s return is tied closely to his experience working with Christopher Nolan on Oppenheimer, where he played Lewis Strauss in a way that made him nearly unrecognizable. That same creative drive seems to be fueling his take on Doctor Doom.

Early footage shown at CinemaCon 2026 hints at a version of Doom that looks and sounds nothing like Tony Stark. There’s an accent, a different physicality, and the signature scarred face from the comics. Everything points to Downey Jr. pushing hard to separate this performance from the one that made him a global icon.

Audiences spent over a decade watching him as Iron Man, so creating distance between the two characters isn’t just important, it’s necessary.

At the end of the day, a lot is riding on Avengers: Doomsday. Marvel and Downey Jr. have been in this position before, taking risks when the odds weren’t exactly in their favor. Back in 2008, Iron Man was a gamble that paid off in a massive way. Now, nearly two decades later, they’re stepping up again with something completely different.

If Downey Jr. delivers the kind of transformative performance he’s aiming for, Doctor Doom could end up being one of the most memorable villains the MCU has ever seen.

Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18, 2026.
