Robert Pattinson Hypes THE BATMAN: PART 2 as a "Really Different Type" of Dark Knight Story

Fans have been waiting a long time to see what’s next for Gotham, and now The Batman: Part II is starting to sound even more interesting. While details are still locked down, Robert Pattinson has dropped a hint that suggests director Matt Reeves isn’t playing it safe with the sequel.

Speaking in a recent interview, Pattinson didn’t spill plot specifics, but he teased that this follow-up isn’t just more of the same gritty detective story we got in the first film. Instead, it sounds like something a lot more unexpected.

"The script is so good. It's kinda crazy, because the first one was a little bit of a different type of Batman movie, and this is a really different type of Batman movie. Hopefully, people will be really pleasantly surprised by it."

That’s an interesting statement considering how distinct The Batman already felt compared to past takes on the Dark Knight. Reeves leaned heavily into noir storytelling, so the idea that the sequel shifts gears again opens the door to all kinds of possibilities.

There’s already been speculation floating around about what that “different” approach might look like. One theory is that the story could take place largely in a single location, possibly drawing inspiration from Grant Morrison’s Arkham Asylum graphic novel.

If that’s true, we could be looking at something more psychological and contained, which would be a cool direction for a Batman movie.

Story rumors have also pointed to a complicated alliance forming in Gotham. There are reports that Batman teams up with District Attorney Harvey Dent, played by Sebastian Stan, and Commissioner Gordon, with Jeffrey Wright returning, to hunt down a serial killer while dealing with the city’s deep-rooted criminal power.

Add in the rumors about the Court of Owls tied to the working title “Semper Vigilans,” and things start to sound even more layered.

There’s also talk hat Scarlett Johansson could be playing Gilda Dent, with a possible twist involving the Phantasm. Nothing official there yet, but it’s the kind of curveball Reeves might actually pull off.

Andy Serkis, who plays Alfred, recently shared his own thoughts on the script, and while he kept things vague, he reinforced the idea that this story is personal for Reeves:

"I obviously can't say too much about the film other than that I am really excited about going back into the world and working with Matt Reeves again, who I've now worked with a number of times, and he's a dear friend, and Rob.

“And the script and the story and the new story really does speak to Matt as a human being and what he feels about life. Rob and he got on brilliantly. And I can't say any more than that, but yeah, the relationship continues to be one of a very close, slightly at odds, but beautiful relationship."

That part about Bruce and Alfred’s relationship continuing to evolve is something fans of the first movie will definitely want to see explored further.

With DC Studios already planning a separate Batman for The Brave and the Bold, this sequel might end up being Reeves’ final chapter in his own Gotham saga. If that’s the case, it makes sense that he’d want to take a big creative swing and go out with a bang..

The Batman: Part II hits theaters on October 1, 2027.
