Rumored AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY Ending Sets Up Two Unlikely Characters as SECRET WARS Leads

New rumored details tied to the ending of Avengers: Doomsday suggest the film may position two legacy Marvel heroes as the emotional and narrative anchors of Avengers: Secret Wars.

While Marvel Studios is keeping story specifics locked down, it’s widely expected that Doomsday will explore multiple parallel realities. The X-Men Universe has already been confirmed, and several insiders continue to claim that Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man will swing back into action.

That Spider-Man variant is rumored to come face-to-face with Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, setting up an early clash between two icons from very different corners of Marvel history.

According to the chatter, the conflict doesn’t last long. By the time the dust settles, both heroes are expected to be standing on the same side heading into Secret Wars.

Insider @MyTimeToShineH claims the final moments of Doomsday directly tee this up, stating, “The end of Doomsday set up Tobey [Maguire] and Hugh Jackman as the leads of Secret Wars.”

The report doesn’t push anyone else out of the spotlight. Tom Holland’s Spider-Man is still expected to play a major role, while Andrew Garfield’s potential return remains a strong possibility, even if details there are still murky.

Between the Secret Wars comics and long-running rumors surrounding the film, the prevailing theory is that a catastrophic Incursion wipes out most realities. Only a small group of survivors make it through, forming a scrappy Multiversal Avengers lineup.

Their mission is to confront Doctor Doom in the patchwork reality known as Battleworld and fight for whatever version of existence is left.

The Multiverse Saga hasn’t always landed cleanly, but it’s hard not to get excited at the idea of these specific versions of Spider-Man and Wolverine sharing meaningful screen time. Back when the Infinity Saga wrapped, the thought of that crossover felt completely out of reach.

Maguire has been open about how much the experience meant to him when he returned as Peter Parker in Spider-Man: No Way Home.

“When they called initially, I was like, 'Finally!'” Maguire previously said. “I got the call and was immediately open about coming to do this. Not without nerves – you know, 'What will this look like and what will the experience be?' But to get to show up with beautiful, talented, creative people and play together? It’s just like, 'Yes!'”

He also made it clear that if Marvel ever calls again, the answer is easy. “It’s fun and exciting. I love these films and I love all of the different series. If these guys called me and said, 'Would you show up tonight to hang out and goof around?' or 'Would you show up to do this movie or read a scene or do a Spider-Man thing?', it would be a 'yes!' Because why wouldn’t I want to do that?”

Whether these rumors pan out or not, just the possibility is enough to get longtime fans fired up. Seeing Maguire’s Spider-Man and Jackman’s Wolverine step into lead roles for Secret Wars would be a wild moment for Marvel’s cinematic history, especially if they’re carrying the weight of the Multiverse on their shoulders.

Avengers: Doomsday is currently set for release on December 18, with Avengers: Secret Wars scheduled to hit theaters on December 17, 2027.
