Rupert Grint Is Returning as Ron Weasley for Broadway’s HARRY POTTER AND THE CURSED CHILD

Rupert Grint is heading back to Hogwarts, but this time it will be on Broadway. More than 15 years after Grint last played Ron in the Harry Potter film series, the actor is officially returning to the role for a limited Broadway run in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

Grint will play the adult version of Ron for 17 weeks at New York City’s Lyric Theatre, beginning February 2, 2027, and continuing through May 30, 2027.

It’s a pretty awesome full-circle moment for Grint, who was only 11 years old when he first stepped into the role that would follow him through all eight Harry Potter movies.

Grint’s casting also follows another major Wizarding World reunion on Broadway. Tom Felton, who played Draco Malfoy throughout the films, joined Harry Potter and the Cursed Child last November as the older Draco. His arrival proved to be a huge draw for fans, driving a major increase in ticket sales and attendance.

Unfortunately, anyone hoping to see Ron and Draco reunited onstage is out of luck. Felton is expected to finish his run on January 3, 2027, about a month before Grint takes over as Ron.

For Grint, returning to the character after so many years comes with an interesting personal connection. Both he and Ron are now fathers, giving the actor a chance to approach the character from a completely different point in life.

In a statement, Grint said: “Ron Weasley has been a part of me since I was 11 years old and I can’t wait to meet him again in this stage of life.

“There is something so full-circle and so special about stepping back into Ron’s shoes now when we are both fathers; it is somehow both very familiar and completely new. And the joy of being back on Broadway, this time in a role that defined so much of my life is truly exciting.

“The first time I saw Cursed Child onstage. I was blown away and I can’t wait to set foot back on Platform 9 ¾ and pick up where I left off. I am overjoyed to join this exceptional cast and crew at the Lyric Theatre this winter.”

This won’t be Grint’s first trip to Broadway. He made his Broadway debut in 2014 in It’s Only a Play, the Terrence McNally comedy that also starred Matthew Broderick and Nathan Lane. Before that, he made his West End debut in Jez Butterworth’s Mojo opposite Ben Whishaw.

Grint has also built up an interesting collection of film and television roles since leaving Hogwarts. He starred in M. Night Shyamalan’s Servant for all four seasons of the Apple TV series and later appeared in Shyamalan’s Knock at the Cabin. He also turned up in Guillermo del Toro’s Netflix anthology series Cabinet of Curiosities.

More recently, Grint starred in Hanna Bergholm’s Nightborn, and he’ll next appear in Paramount Pictures’ Ebenezer, which opens in theaters on November 13.

Producers Sonia Friedman and Colin Callender see Grint’s Broadway return as more than a bit of Harry Potter nostalgia. In a joint statement, they said:

“We, along with all the wizarding world fans around the globe, watched Rupert grow up through his portrayal of Ron while preserving the qualities at the very heart of the character – his humor, his bravery, and of course, that unmistakably cheeky grin – like an invisible thread woven throughout the years.

“In joining our extraordinary company onstage at the Lyric Theatre in New York City,” they continued, “Rupert is not simply revisiting a role from his past. He is continuing a journey he began as a child and carrying it forward with all the life and experience he has gained since filming concluded, including a career that has taken him from film to television to acclaimed stage work on both Broadway and the West End.

“His return creates a powerful bridge between the story audiences first fell in love with and the story of family, legacy and the passage of time that Harry Potter and the Cursed Child carries forward. We feel enormously privileged not only to welcome a world-class actor to our Broadway company, but to welcome back the actor who made Ron Weasley so beloved.”

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child picks up years after the original story and follows Harry, Ron, Hermione, Draco and their children as a new generation deals with the complicated legacy left behind by the events of the original series.

For longtime fans, getting to watch the kid who grew up playing Ron now portray him as a father should be awesome. Grint spent a huge chunk of his childhood and teenage years with this character, but he’s now coming back with decades of additional life and acting experience.

There’s also something wonderfully weird about realizing that the Harry Potter cast has reached the point where they can return to these characters and actually be the right age to play their older versions.

Grint’s 17-week run in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child begins February 2, 2027, at Broadway’s Lyric Theatre and ends May 30, 2027.

For Potter fans who grew up watching Ron complain, panic, crack jokes and somehow always show up when his friends needed him, seeing Grint step back into those shoes should be a lot of fun.
