Ryan Reynolds Downplays Deadpool’s Return in Avengers: Doomsday, Says He “Hasn’t Stepped Foot” on Set
Is Ryan Reynolds back as Deadpool in Avengers: Doomsday? That’s the question Marvel fans have been running with ever since Reynolds posted a cryptic photo in August showing a spray-painted “A” over the Avengers logo.
The internet immediately went wild, speculating that Deadpool would be joining Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in their biggest battle yet. Things escalated further when rumors spread that Reynolds and Robert Downey Jr., who’s making his Marvel comeback in Doomsday as Doctor Doom, were feuding on set.
But according to Reynolds, none of that is true. While speaking with Entertainment Weekly to promote his new documentary John Candy: I Like Me, Reynolds claimed he hasn’t even been near the Avengers: Doomsday set.
The doc reveals that he’s hidden John Candy Easter eggs throughout Deadpool, Deadpool 2, and Deadpool and Wolverine, and when asked if he’s doing the same in the upcoming Avengers film, he laughed it off. Reynolds joked.
“There’s four that I’ve got in there. Of course, I’ve written them all at home in my PJs, and nobody’s seen ’em nor have I stepped foot on set. But, yeah, that’s about as far as I’ll go on that one.”
Reynolds officially brought Deadpool into the Marvel Cinematic Universe last summer with Deadpool & Wolverine, which smashed records by earning $1.3 billion worldwide and becoming the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time.
The movie also surprised fans with the debut of Channing Tatum as Gambit, who’s confirmed to return in Avengers: Doomsday. That reveal, plus Reynolds’ Avengers post, had many assuming Deadpool was guaranteed to show up. For now though, Reynolds isn’t spilling any secrets.
As for those feud rumors, it was reported there is “zero bad blood” between Reynolds and Downey, while another insider added that “the two have never met in person,” which actually lines up with Reynolds’ claim that he hasn’t been on set yet.
So while fans are eager to see Deadpool mixing it up with the Avengers, Reynolds is playing coy. Whether he’s being truthful or just expertly trolling in true Wade Wilson fashion remains to be seen.
Avengers: Doomsday is set to hit theaters on December 18, 2026.
