Sam Raimi Would Love To Direct a New EVIL DEAD Movie, But Only If Bruce Campbell Returns

Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell, and Rob Tapert are in the process of developing and producing a new Evil Dead film with a new director. They were initially developing a few ideas, one of them would have continued the story of Ash if Bruce Campbell decided to return. The other would have continued director Fede Alverez’s if he would want to return. This third idea involved a film that would be tackled by a whole new director, and that is the project they are currently moving forward with.

Campbell previously confirmed that they are taking the Evil Dead franchise in a whole new direction that will offer a new take on the mythology. This story will focus on another idiot to try and stop evil. But, Raimi would still be interested in directing another Evil Dead film if Campbell decided to come back.

During a Q&A on Reddit, Raimi said:

"Bruce, Rob [Tapert], and I are working with a young filmmaker who is writing a new Evil Dead story that he will direct. As for me.... I would love to direct a new Evil Dead movie... but I'd really like to do it with Bruce. And he says he's retired the character. I hope not."

I hope Campbell isn’t retired from Ash forever either! But, the actor has made it very clear that he’s done. When talking about the new film, Campbell said:

“It’s okay to pass it along to another idiot to try and stop evil from destroying the world. One idiot tried—he did pretty good. It’s time to let other innocent people with no skills try to save the world. And there’s more stories to tell.

“So we think we have a cool premise. We have a new filmmaker that Sam Raimi has hand-chosen. So he’s very involved in it. We’ll be involved in the story, and we’ll try and make sure the actors don’t completely suck. And then we’re gonna make another one, yeah. There’s lots of stories…creepy books…lots of people to torment.”

While it’s sad that Raimi won’t be directing Campbell in a new Evil Dead film any time soon, I’m still looking forward to seeing the story that this new film will tell.
