Shawn Levy’s STAR WARS Movie May Be Closer Than We Think, Says Writer
It’s been a while since we heard anything solid about the Star Wars movie coming from Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy, but there have been casting rumors. But, now, we have a promising update to share.
Screenwriter Jonathan Tropper, who's writing the project, recently gave fans a subtle but optimistic nudge of reassurance when asked about the film’s status. Tropper told Screen Rant:
“I am [excited] too. I hope it's on the way sooner than you think.”
The movie is reportedly set after The Rise of Skywalker, which already gives it a unique place on the timeline, which is still relatively uncharted territory. There’s also buzz around Ryan Gosling being attached, though nothing has been confirmed by Lucasfilm yet.
There are also reports that Jodie Comer and Jesse Plemons are in the running for major roles in the film. Again, non of the casting has been confirmed.
As for the release schedule, Kathleen Kennedy, Lucasfilm president, previously confirmed Levy’s film is following The Mandalorian & Grogu, which hits theaters May 22, 2026.
“I'm producing the Mandalorian movie right now, and I'm also producing Shawn Levy's movie, which is after that.”
So if things stay on track, Tropper’s comment might hint at a 2027-2028 release. One thing we know for sure is they haven’t started shooting the movie yet.
Meanwhile, the galaxy far, far away isn’t slowing down. Andor season 2 drops its triple-episode premiere on April 22 (US) and April 23 (UK) on Disney+, and the Daisy Ridley-led Rey movie is still cooking, now with The Adjustment Bureau’s George Nolfi stepping in to write the script, replacing Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight. Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy remains attached to direct.
There’s a lot brewing behind the scenes, but if Tropper’s comments are any indication, Shawn Levy’s Star Wars adventure might be lining up to surprise us all… a little sooner than expected.
