Sigourney Weaver Says "Ship Has Sailed" on Playing Ripley Again in ALIEN 5

Years ago, Sigourney Weever was set to play Ellen Ripley again in a fifth Alien film that was being developed by director Neill Blomkamp. That film sounded like it would have been freakin’ awesome, but unfortunately, it was never meant to be.

It would have been so awesome to see Weever back as Ripley, but now it looks like we’re never going to get that opportunity. During a recent interview with Weaver, she said that her days playing Ripley are over.

“There are all kinds of younger actors taking this kind of role. And there was an Alien [film] that I really wanted to do with Neill Blomkamp and we didn’t get to do that, but, you know, that ship has sailed. I’m very happy doing what I’m doing. I put in my time in space!”

When previously talking about working with Blomkamp Weaver said: “I can’t think of a better director. He’s a real fan. I think he’ll be true to the world and take it in unexpected directions. It’s got a lot of sinew in it. It will certainly stand up to the others and probably break a lot of new ground as well.”

Weaver and Michael Biehn were both going to reprise their roles in the film and James Cameron and Weaver both said that they loved his script that Blomkamp wrote. The movie never happened, though, because Fox decided to focus on Ridley Scott‘s vision of the franchise. Scott even said that Blomkamp's Alien 5 would "never see the light."

We've already seen some really cool concept art from the film in the past, and everytime I see it, I’m bummed out this movie never happened. The events of the film would have picked up after the events of James Cameron’s Aliens and ignored the events of Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection. There was also another attempt to make another Alien movie with Weaver, but it never seemed to gain any traction.

20th Century Studios is currently in production on a new Alien movie with Evil Dead director Fede Alvarez. The movie follows a “group of young people on a distant world who find themselves in a confrontation with the most terrifying life form in the universe.”

I’m excited aebout that movie, but it’s still a shame that we’ll never see Weaver in the role of Ripley again.
