SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE Director Offers Update on How Many Spider-Man Characters Appear in the Film
It was previously revealed that Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will consist of 240 Spider-Man characters, and well… it turns out that there’s going to be even more than that! Director Justin Thompson recently offered an update on the count of Spider-Man characters that will appear in the movie and that number is now up to 280 characters! During an interview with Collider, the filmmaker said:
"The exact number? Oh boy, we kept adding, like all the way up until the very end. Honestly, I'm gonna be level with you, we just finished the film, like in the last like two weeks, and I don't think I've had time to pause and actually take a final count. But I think it was about 280 the last time I looked in. Just to be clear, that doesn't mean specific, unique characters that you might recognize, it might mean variations as well. But if you're just talking about named characters, then I think there's probably about 95."
280 Spider-Man variants is a lot! A lot of those characters have been teased in the trailers that we’ve seen featuring all of the different Spider-Man characters chasing down Miles Morales.
The cast for the film includes Shameik Moore as Miles, Hailee Steinfeld as Gwen, Brian Tyree Henry as Miles’ dad, Jefferson Davis; Luna Lauren Velez as Miles’ mom, Rio Morales; Issa Rae as Jessica Drew, aka Spider-Woman; Jorma Taccone as Vulture; Rachel Dratch; Shea Whigham; Greta Lee; and Jason Schwartzman as the villain, Spot. Andy Samberg also recently joined the cast.
The characters will be spread acoss multiple universes including Gwen’s Earth-65, with its distinctive watercolor palette; the India-inspired Mumbattan; Nueva York, the home of Oscar Isaac’s Spider-Man 2099, aka Miguel O’Hara; the punky New London, inhabited by Daniel Kaluuya’s Hobart “Hobie” Brown, a.k.a. Spider-Punk; and then there’s a secretive fifth dimension that’s being kept tightly under wraps for now.
The sequel follows Miles Morales as he is “plunged into the multiverse where he joins forces with Gwen Stacy and a new team of Spider-folks to face off with a villain more powerful than anything they have ever encountered.”
After reuniting with Gwen Stacy, “Brooklyn’s full-time, friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is catapulted across the Multiverse, where he encounters a team of Spider-People charged with protecting its very existence. But when the heroes clash on how to handle a new threat, Miles finds himself pitted against the other Spiders and must redefine what it means to be a hero so he can save the people he loves most.”
The movie is set to be released on June 2nd, 2023!
