SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY Almost Unleashed an Even Bigger Villains’ Showdown
It sounds like Spider-Man: Brand New Day could've packed even more of Spider-Man's legendary rogues into the action.
While fans are already looking forward to seeing what the next chapter has in store for Peter Parker, director Destin Daniel Cretton has revealed that one of the movie's biggest sequences almost featured a massive battle with a whole lineup of classic villains.
Speaking with Nerdtropolis, Cretton was asked if there were any lesser-known Spider-Man villains from the comics that didn't make the final cut. He said: “Yeah, there were a lot.”
He went on to explain that an entire sequence was ultimately removed during production. “There was a whole other scene that ended up being cut from the movie” in which they were “going to throw a whole bunch of villains into this giant fight.”
That certainly sparks the imagination. Spider-Man has one of the greatest rogues' galleries in comic book history, so the idea of seeing a giant brawl packed with classic villains is the kind of thing fans would've loved. It sounds like those designs didn't go to waste.
Cretton added, “We were looking at a lot of classics, and it was really fun, though. We got to design a lot of them.”
He also hinted that those villains may still have a future, teasing that some of them could eventually show up in the next Spider-Man movie. Back in 2021, ahead of the release of Spider-Man: No Way Home, producer Amy Pascal said that the plan was to continue with another Spider-Man trilogy.
More recently, Pascal praised Cretton's work expressing hope that he sticks around for more adventures with the web-slinger. She called him an “incredibly gifted action director.” She added, “But there is not one thing in this movie that doesn’t come from emotion and heart and character.”
It's encouraging to hear that while Brand New Day is delivering big action, the filmmakers are still keeping Peter Parker's emotional journey at the center of the story. That's always been one of the character's greatest strengths, and it sounds like Cretton understood that balance from the start.
The film stars Tom Holland as Peter Parker/Spider-Man alongside Zendaya as Michelle "MJ" Jones-Watson, Jacob Batalon as Ned Leeds, and many more.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day swings into U.S. theaters on July 31, 2026, and after hearing about this deleted villains' battle, it's hard not to wonder which classic Spider-Man enemies almost made the cut... and which ones Cretton might still be saving for the future.
