Stephen Graham Locks in Return for GREYHOUND 2 as Apple’s WWII Sequel Sets Sail
Apple Studios is officially back on the open water. Production has begun on Greyhound 2, the follow-up to the hit World War II naval thriller, and Stephen Graham is back on board alongside Tom Hanks.
Cameras are rolling in Australia as the sequel expands the scope of the story and pushes Captain Krause and his crew into even more dangerous territory.
Graham has closed a deal to reprise his role as Charlie Cole, reuniting him with Hanks after their intense run in the first film. Rob Morgan and Elisabeth Shue are also returning, while rising Australian actor Jack Patten, who recently broke out in Robin Hood, joins the cast as a new addition.
Like the original, the sequel is being written by Hanks himself and is once again directed by Aaron Schneider, with Gary Goetzman producing. Apple is backing the film through Screen NSW’s Made in NSW Fund, keeping the production anchored firmly in Australia.
Story-wise, Greyhound 2 isn’t just retreading familiar waters. The new chapter follows Captain Krause from the beaches of Normandy all the way to the Pacific Ocean, tracking the Greyhound crew as they continue to play a key role in turning the tide of the war. It’s a bigger canvas that moves beyond the Atlantic and into some of the most pivotal moments of World War II.
The original Greyhound premiered globally on Apple TV in July 2020 and quickly became a standout for the streaming service. It set viewership records and went on to earn an Academy Award nomination for Best Sound.
The film centered on a seasoned Navy officer taking command for the first time, tasked with protecting a convoy of 37 ships carrying thousands of soldiers and vital supplies across the Atlantic. With no air cover for five straight days, the mission pushed Krause and his small escort fleet into constant combat with Nazi U-boats in the deadly stretch of ocean known as the Black Pit.
That story was inspired by real events from the Battle of the Atlantic, unfolding during the earliest months of America’s alliance with Great Britain and the Allied Forces. Its stripped-down tension and procedural realism helped it stand out in a crowded WWII genre.
For Graham, he’s also set to star opposite Zazie Beetz and Liev Schreiber in an upcoming Apple TV series based on the novels by Lars Kepler. He’s also riding high after his Emmy-winning performance in Netflix’s Adolescence.
I liked the first film and I’m looking forward to seeing how this sequel turns out.
