Steven Moffat Confirms Nothing Happening with SHERLOCK but He Does See Them Returning
A couple of months ago, Sherlock series producer Sue Vertue caused a stir when she said in an interview that there is a future for the series.
Fans of the show wondered if this was a tease of something brewing, but the show’s creator, Steven Moffat, has come in to clarify that there’s nothing currently in the works, but he did offer some encouraging words about the show’s future.
The show’s writers and creators have always made it clear that the biggest obstacle to another season of the series laid with the busy schedules of its stars, Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman.
Both actors have had very busy careers over the last seven years, since the show’s final episode, but many of their obligations with franchises like Marvel and The Hobbit, respectively, have died down.
So Moffat was asked by SFX magazine about Sherlock’s future while promoting his upcoming Doctor Who Christmas special “Joy to the World,” which he wrote, and he said:
"I'd love to do it again. Look, it's not a format that wears out. It’s over a hundred years old and going strong, so why aren’t we making more?
“Sue only said that because she was asked and suddenly it becomes an announcement about a film! There is no new news here. We’re just fending off that question, as ever."
He went on:
“We would happily do it again and I hope someday that we do. It seems perverse not to. You make enough shows in your lifetime that no one gives a flying one about, so it's nice to have one that people are passionate about. It's almost presumptuous, almost arrogant, not to do it again. But there are no hard plans, none at all."
He does have an idea for the what show would look like in future episodes though:
"It would be nice to see them just a little bit older, because it was always very foregrounded in our version that they were younger, let alone the fact that they were updated.
“It'd be quite nice to see them at more of a Jeremy Brett and Edward Hardwicke age, a bit more Rathbone and Bruce. I think that would be lovely. Now we can see the more famously middle-aged version."
I’ll take it! The fans want it, the creator is ready to go, so lets get Cumberbatch and Freeman on board. Sherlock is one of my all time favorite shows, and though I love to go back and revisit the old episodes, I’m ready for a few new Sherlock Holmes adventures.
