Steven Yeun Talks About Joining Marvel's THUNDERBOLTS and Says the Intentions of the Character He Plays Are "Very Clear"

The Walking Dead alum Steven Yeun is set to make his big debut MCU in Marvel’s Thunderbolts movie. When his casting was first announced his part was described as being “not only significant to this film but could also play a role going forward in future films of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.”

We don’t know who exactly he’s playing, but during a recent interview with the actor, he talks about joining the MCU and teases that the intentions of the character he plays are very clear to him. He was also excited about the opportunity to re-team with director Jake Schreier, who he worked with the upcoming Netflix series Beef. Yeun explained to Empire:

“I don’t know if it was explicitly on my bucket list. It was more the story, getting to work with Jake Schreier again, who directed Beef, and what his intentions were. The intentions of the particular character that they wanted me to play were very clear, and that’s what drew me to the film.”

We just have no idea who that character will be or if it will even be a hero of a villain. We’re just going to have to wait and see. He also went on to talk about working with Bong Joon-Ho’s Mickey 17 saying:

“I really learn so much from him. There’s this camaraderie that he allows me to participate in with him that I really appreciate. At the end of filming [Mickey 17], I remember turning to him as we shot my last scene, and I was like, ‘I learned a lot… and thank you.’ It was a killer set to be on.”

Yeun joins an ensemble cast in Thunderbolts that includes Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, David Harbour as Red Guardian, Julie Louis-Dreyfus as Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, Wyatt Russell as US Agent, Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost, Olga Kurylenko as Taskmaster, and of course, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova. Then there’s Harrison Ford, who is taking on the role of General Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross who is going to be President of the United States in Captain America: New World Order. Ayo Edebiri also joined the cast n an undisclosed role.

We don’t know much about what the story for Thunderbolts will entail, but recently learned a new detail about the Thunderbolts team from Kevin Feige, and he shared that Bucky Barnes is set to lead the team in the movie.

The film is being directed by Jake Schreier (Paper Towns, Kidding), from a script by Eric Pearson (Thor: Ragnarok, Black Widow) and Kurt Busiek. Thunderbolts is set to premiere on July 26th, 2023.
