SUPERGIRL Brings in Long Time Zack Snyder Collaborator Junkie XL To Score The Film, Replacing Ramin Djawadi

DC Studios’ Supergirl just made a pretty major creative pivot, and it’s one that should get fans talking. The upcoming DCU film has officially swapped out composer Ramin Djawadi in favor of Tom Holkenborg, better known as Junkie XL.

Djawadi, whose credits include Game of Thrones and Iron Man, was previously announced as the composer for Supergirl. That’s no small get, which makes this change all the more surprising. According to official press notes for the film, Djawadi is no longer attached, and Junkie XL has stepped in to handle the score.

Interestingly, this isn’t the first time a DC Studios project has gone through a late-stage music shift. Superman was initially set to feature a score by John Murphy, before David Fleming came on board later in production and carried things forward.

Junkie XL brings a very different musical flavor to the table. As a longtime collaborator of Zack Snyder, his resume includes Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Zack Snyder’s Justice League, Army of the Dead, and Rebel Moon.

Outside of the DC and Snyder circles, he’s also delivered scores for The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Deadpool, and Godzilla vs. Kong. His style tends to lean heavier, louder, and more muscular, which suggests DC Studios wants Supergirl to hit with a bit more bite than a traditional superhero score.

Co-CEO James Gunn previously explained that this isn’t a bright-and-breezy take on the character, saying:

"This is really an anti-hero story. What I loved about the script that Anna [Nogueira] wrote is that Supergirl’s got a lot of baggage and a lot of demons coming into this, which is very different than where Superman is in his life.

“And having Milly [Alcock] being able to come in and play that and all the complexity of that and do it in a way that in a very human way, where we can actually have empathy for her, and have that dance of the humor and someone that has that toughness.

“It was such a gift to get her. It’s really surprising the headspace Supergirl is in and the journey she gets to go on, which is very unusual for a typical superhero movie, which this is not."

Supergirl, DC Studios’ next big-screen release, stars Milly Alcock in the role of Supergirl aka Kara Zor-El, with Craig Gillespie directing from a screenplay by Ana Nogueira. The cast also includes Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, David Krumholtz, Emily Beecham, and Jason Momoa.

The story follows Kara as she’s pulled into a brutal, deeply personal conflict that sends her across the cosmos alongside an unexpected ally, blending vengeance, justice, and a whole lot of emotional fallout along the way.

With Junkie XL now shaping the soundscape, Supergirl feels poised to carve out a distinct identity within the DCU, one that’s rougher around the edges and emotionally charged.

Supergirl flies into theaters on June 26, 2026, from Warner Bros. Pictures.
