SUPERGIRL Is Described as a Mix of LOGAN, MAN OF STEEL, GUARDIANS VOL. 3, and THE LAST OF US

New info has surfaced from the latest test screening of Supergirl, and it paints a clearer picture of what DC Studios is cooking up with Kara Zor-El’s big-screen return.

There was a screening held this past Thursday and early reactions suggest this version of Supergirl leans heavier into darker subject matter than Superman.

The story reportedly digs into elements like human trafficking and doesn’t shy away from violence. Even with that edge, viewers describe a strong mix of humor and heart that keeps the movie from getting too bleak. It sounds like DC is aiming for something intense but still accessible.

One of the most praised elements coming out of the screening is the visual presentation. According to @AxelTalksFilm, the cinematography is “an upgrade compared to Superman.”

There’s also word of a brutal hallway fight sequence that stacks up with similar scenes in Daredevil and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which sounds interesting.

Villain-wise, reactions are a little more complicated. Krem of the Yellow Hills has reportedly been redesigned and described by some as “extremely ‘menacing’ and a tremendous villain.”

However, trusted insider @Cryptic4KQual added that two separate sources came away unimpressed, labeling Krem as “lame” and “underwhelming.” That kind of split reaction suggests DC may still be tweaking how effective the antagonist feels on screen.

One thing that does seem to be landing across the board is Lobo. Jason Momoa’s take on the intergalactic bounty hunter apparently isn’t just a cameo or side distraction. His role is described as “substantial” and even “crucial to the ending,” which means that Lobo may play a much bigger part in shaping Kara’s journey than many expected.

They also shared an interesting comparison that helps frame the movie’s overall vibe, saying: "It's basically bits of Superman 2025, [Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3], Logan, Man of Steel and The Last of Us mashed into one film without the R-rated elements. Whoever's seen it would probably understand my film choices. Krypto is Rocket, Kara is Joel/Logan."

That comparison makes it sound like Supergirl is leaning into emotional weight and character-driven storytelling, with Krypto acting as a scene-stealing companion rather than just comic relief.

Marketing-wise, DC Studios doesn’t seem to be rushing things. A Super Bowl trailer isn’t expected, but the studio is still planning a clever push. Krypto is set to appear in the Puppy Bowl, which is a smart way to get families and younger viewers aware that the movie is on the way.

Supergirl is the latest feature film from DC Studios and Warner Bros. Pictures and arrives in theaters worldwide next summer.

The film stars Milly Alcock in the dual role of Supergirl and Kara Zor-El, with Craig Gillespie directing from a screenplay by Ana Nogueira. The cast also includes Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, David Krumholtz, and Emily Beecha.

The story follows Kara as she’s pulled into an interstellar quest for vengeance and justice after a ruthless enemy hits painfully close to home, forcing her to team up with an unexpected ally.

Supergirl is currently set to fly into theaters on June 26, 2026.
