Taika Waititi Hopes His STAR WARS Movie Will Capture The "Joy and Entertainment" of The Original Trilogy
Like it or not, Taika Waititi is still developing his Star Wars movie for Lucasfilm, and while it doesn’t sound like it’s going to happen anytime soon, the filmmaker continues to tease what he is looking to accomplish with this movie.
During a recent appearance on the Kelly Clarkson Show, Waititi shared that he is hoping to capture the “joy and entertainment” of the films in the original trilogy, specifically mentioning The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi with his film. He explained:
“I’ve been developing [the Star Wars film] for a few years, but I think with any film, but that one in particular, it’s something I’d really like to get right so I don’t want to rush it. It’s going to bubble along on the side...I wanna capture that joy and entertainment of those early ones like The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi and all those ones, so I’m trying to figure that out. It’ll happen.”
These comments come shortly after the director came out and said that his Star Wars movie “will piss people off.” When Waititi was asked about his Star Wars movie, he responded, saying: "It will be...dramatic pause...a Taika Waititi film. It’s gonna piss people off." Which is a great thing to say to get fans riled up!
Waititi has explained in the past that he’s looking to create something new with the franchise and expand the universe beyond all of the characters and locations that we’re familiar with. He has said that he’s still trying to figure out an idea for the movie and that he’s “still throwing everything at the wall.” He also explained that he still hasn’t quite figured out his idea.
The filmmaker also talked about what he is looking to bring to the franchise, saying: "Look, I think for the Star Wars universe to expand, it has to expand. I don't think that I'm any use in the Star Wars universe making a film where everyone's like, 'Oh great, well that's the blueprints to the Millennium Falcon, ah that's Chewbacca's grandmother.' That all stands alone, that's great, though I would like to take something new and create some new characters and just expand the world, otherwise it feels like it's a very small story."
Are you looking forward to seeing what Waititi ends up bringing to the Star Wars franchise?
