THE BATMAN: PART II Writer Mattson Tomlin Teases a “New and Dangerous” Sequel as Filming Nears
The next chapter of Gotham’s dark saga is finally gearing up to roll cameras, and now we’ve got a little more insight into what’s brewing. The Batman: Part II is set to begin filming in the UK this April, and as anticipation builds for the long-awaited sequel, co-writer Mattson Tomlin is making it clear that expectations inside the creative team are sky high.
It’s been over five years since The Batman hit theaters in 2022 and reintroduced audiences to a raw, early-years version of the Dark Knight. That’s a serious gap between installments, but it sounds like that time has been put to good use.
Before cameras start rolling, we’ve learned via Hollywood North Buzz that the sequel will shoot under the working title “Vengeance 2.” If that sounds familiar, it should.
The first film operated under the working title “Vengeance” as well. It’s a nice little nod to where this gritty version of Bruce Wayne began and a reminder that this world still runs on obsession and retribution.
Around the same time that detail surfaced, Tomlin jumped online to respond to a fan asking about the sequel. His answer didn’t hold back:
"We worked exceptionally hard to tell a story worthy of the character. Something that feels new and dangerous. The bar couldn't be higher."
That’s exactly what fans want to hear. This version of Batman thrives on risk, and the idea that the creative team is pushing into fresh territory instead of retreading old ground is encouraging. Tomlin continued:
"Looking forward to people seeing it and being able to talk about it at length. Can't begin to describe what this film means to me."
And just to drive home how much sweat went into it, he later wrote:
"We did our actual, literal, pushed beyond the limit best."
It’s hard to ask for more commitment than that.
When The Batman wrapped up, it hinted at a potential alliance between The Joker and The Riddler. That prospect left some fans conflicted. Both villains have had plenty of time in the spotlight over the years, and some were hoping director Matt Reeves would explore lesser-used corners of Batman’s rogues gallery.
There were also comparisons floating around to The Dark Knight, since that 2008 film famously featured The Joker front and center. But it now seems like The Batman: Part II may be charting a different course.
Signs are pointing toward Two-Face playing a major role this time around. Harvey Dent, along with his father and wife, have reportedly been cast. In the comics, Gilda Dent’s ties to the “Holiday Killer” storyline open the door to some intense psychological drama and potential twists.
There are also rumors and fan theories circling names like Hush, Jeremiah Arkham, and even Phantasm. Nothing is confirmed, but Reeves’ Gotham feels like the perfect playground for those characters.
Reeves returns to direct from a script he co-wrote with Tomlin. The film stars Robert Pattinson as Batman, with Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Colin Farrell, Andy Serkis, and Jeffrey Wright also attached.
The Batman: Part II is currently scheduled to hit theaters on October 1, 2027.
