THE BATMAN Spinoff Series About Gotham City P.D. Is Reportedly Still in Development
After the Matt Reeves-directed film The Batman was released, two spinoff shows were announced. One focuses on The Penguin and the other was going to be set within the Gotham City Police Department. It was later reported that the Gotham City P.D. series had evolved into a show set in Arkham Asylum.
Well, Variety mentioned in a recent article that there are three spinoff shows in development and one of them is set within the Gotham P.D., they say that one “remains in development.” There are no other details offered, but that news comes as a surprise.
When the series was initially announced, it was explained that the show “will build upon the film’s examination of the anatomy of corruption in Gotham City, launching a new Batman universe across multiple platforms. The series will extend the world established in the movie and further explore the myriad of complex characters of Gotham.”
When that all changed, Reeves shared the news, saying: “The GCPD thing, that story has kind of evolved. We've actually now moving more into the realm of exactly what would happen in the world of Arkham as it relates coming off of our movie, and some of the characters, again in their origins that you would – almost leaning into the idea of – it's like a horror movie or a haunted house that is Arkham.
"The idea of, again the way that Gotham is a character in the movie, I really want Arkham to exist as a character, so that you go into this environment and encounter these characters in a way that feels really fresh. And so in our work on Gotham, that story started to evolve, and it started feeling, 'Wait, we should really lean into this.' And that's kind of where that's gone."
But, now it looks like there’s a chance that we will see both, which I’m totally fine with! I’m completely on board with Reeves’ plans for his Batman universe and while we’ve still got a way to go, I’m looking forward to see how all of these projects turns out!
