The BORDERLANDS Movie Suffered a $114 Million Loss at the Box Office
The Borderlands movie has finally crawled out of theaters and it came out beaten, bloody, and bruised. The movie bombed big time at the box office and its take barely covered its marketing costs. Yikes!
Variety reports that Borderlands had a production budget of $115 million and that its distributor Lionsgate added an extra $30 million to that with the marketing and distribution costs.
So, the full budget of the film was $145 million, but it only made $31 million when all was said and done. That means the movie has a $114 million loss.
You know, this movie should’ve been a really cool and entertaining movie, but Eli Roth sure did crap out a turd of a film. This was a paint-by-numbers movie, and there was no real effort put into crafting a somewhat decent story. It’s a shame for such a cool video game franchise.
Cate Blanchette defended the film saying: “I mean, it’s not The Grapes of Wrath. It’s not Blade Runner. It’s its own strange, weird thing, and when you look at the casting, there’s a motley quality to it. We’re a very motley crew, in life and in art. I don’t think anyone would call Borderlands art, but it’s fun.”
I think a lot of people who have seen the film would disagree with that as it has 10% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. I thought the movie would at least be fun to watch, but nope, there was no fun to be had.
In the film, “Lilith, an infamous bounty hunter with a mysterious past, reluctantly returns to her home, Pandora, the most chaotic planet in the galaxy. Her mission is to find the missing daughter of Atlas, the universe’s most powerful S.O.B.
“Lilith forms an unexpected alliance with a ragtag team of misfits – Roland, a seasoned mercenary on a mission; Tiny Tina, a feral pre-teen demolitionist; Krieg, Tina’s musclebound protector; Tannis, the oddball scientist who’s seen it all; and Claptrap, a wiseass robot.
“Together, these unlikely heroes must battle an alien species and dangerous bandits to uncover one of Pandora’s most explosive secrets.
“The fate of the universe could be in their hands – but they’ll be fighting for something more: each other. Based on one of the best-selling videogame franchises of all time, welcome to BORDERLANDS.”
The movie stars Cate Blanchett as Lilith, Jamie Lee Curtis as Tannis, Kevin Hart as Roland, Jack Black's character Claptrap, Ariana Greenblatt as Tiny Tina, and Florian Munteanu as Krieg.
