THE FANTASTIC FOUR Star Julia Garner Talks Silver Surfer Spinoff and Her Cosmic Future in the MCU
Julia Garner’s leap into the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Shalla-Bal, the Silver Surfer of Fantastic Four: First Steps, has stirred up plenty of conversation, curiosity, and cosmic-level speculation.
And now, thanks to a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Garner has opened up a bit about what’s next… even if Marvel’s notorious secrecy still has her lips mostly sealed.
When asked about her future in the MCU, Garner admitted she’s just as in the dark as the rest of us.
“Oh my God, I wish I could answer that question, but I don’t have an answer, honestly. I was just happy to be a part of this movie. But we’ll see.”
That said, she is game for more, especially if it means headlining a standalone Silver Surfer project.
“A hundred percent, I would love to do that. The Silver Surfer is such a cool character, and I feel like it’s so rare to be presented with any sort of mystery in this day and age.
“So any kind of energy like that on screen, I know I want to see that, so that would be awesome if that happened.”
Marvel fans got their first glimpse of her version of the cosmic herald in the recent trailer for the film where Garner’s Silver Surfer makes a sleek and interesting entrance.
While some questioned the casting at first, hardcore comic readers recognized the deep-cut inspiration. In the alternate Marvel reality of Earth-9997, it’s Shalla-Bal, lover of Norrin Radd, who becomes the Herald of Galactus instead of him. I’m sure this movie will mix things up a bit with the origin.
As for what comes next, that’s anyone’s guess. Garner’s co-stars Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach are already confirmed for Avengers: Doomsday. Garner, though, hasn’t been announced… yet.
Marvel might be keeping that card close to the vest to avoid spoiling how The Fantastic Four: First Steps plays out. But, there are plenty of cool and great stories to tell with the character.
For now, we’ll have to wait-and-see how Silver Surfer’s path will be carved in the MCU.
