Julia Garner Talks About Becoming the Silver Surfer in THE FANTASTIC 4: FIRST STEPS
Julia Garner is stepping into uncharted territory in The Fantastic 4: First Steps, taking on the role of the Silver Surfer in the Marvel Cinematic Universe's long-awaited debut of Marvel's first family.
Fans are really curious about Garner's portrayal of a reimagined version of the Silver Surfer, and the actress opened up about the unique challenges of bringing the character to life.
In a candid conversation with Who What Wear, Garner shared details about the production process, revealing that the film relies entirely on motion capture technology to create the Silver Surfer’s ethereal, otherworldly appearance.
The actress explained: “You have to imagine everything when you’re doing it as if you’re auditioning. Even though we had the sets, I didn’t have my costume or hair and makeup or anything.”
Performing without the usual visual aids may have been a challenge, but it was one Garner was eager to tackle. When talking about what excited her about playing the character, she said:
“With the Silver Surfer, there’s still something very mysterious about it. That mystery is very important to me as an actor. It’s such an iconic character, and it felt very different for me. I’ve never played a character like that.”
The synopsis reads: “Set against the vibrant backdrop of a 1960s-inspired, retro-futuristic world, Marvel Studios' The Fantastic Four: First Steps introduces Marvel’s First Family—Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic (Pedro Pascal), Sue Storm/Invisible Woman (Vanessa Kirby), Johnny Storm/Human Torch (Joseph Quinn) and Ben Grimm/The Thing (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) as they face their most daunting challenge yet.
“Forced to balance their roles as heroes with the strength of their family bond, they must defend Earth from a ravenous space god called Galactus (Ralph Ineson) and his enigmatic Herald, Silver Surfer (Julia Garner). And if Galactus’ plan to devour the entire planet and everyone on it weren’t bad enough, it suddenly gets very personal.”
Additional roles are being played by Paul Walter Hauser, John Malkovich, and Natasha Lyonne.
The movie is being directed by Matt Shakman from a screenplay by Josh Friedman, who was brought in to rewrite the script originally written by Jeff Kaplan and Ian Springer.
The Fantastic 4: First Steps is scheduled to hit theaters on July 25, 2025.
