The OBI-WAN KENOBI Series Will Premiere on Disney+ in May 2022
Thanks to Disney+ Enterprise/Global Program Manager Brandon SanGiovanni, we now know that Lucasfilm’s long-awaited Obi-Wan Kenobi series is set to premiere in May 2022! He shared the news in a Tweet that has since been deleted, but a screenshot of that Tweet was taken and shared on Reddit. The Tweet says, "Our very own Obi-Wan will be saying 'Hello there...' on Disney+… May 2022”
The story is set 10 years after the dramatic events of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, "where Kenobi faced his greatest defeat, the downfall and corruption of his best friend and Jedi apprentice, Anakin Skywalker, turned evil Sith Lord, Darth Vader."
Ewan McGregor is back in the role of Obi-Wan, and he will be joined by Hayden Christensen, who is back as Darth Vader. Seeing these two come together again after all these years is pretty freakin’ cool!
When previously talking about the series, McGregor said, "There's a hunger for this character to come back. The fans have been waiting long enough, you know, and the most beautiful thing of all is that it's brought me back together with Hayden (Christensen)... [We'll] have another swing at each other. It might be quite satisfying for everybody. We hope that you enjoy it as much as we've enjoyed making it!"
Director Deborah Chow added, "Something that is extremely exciting is the return of Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan Kenobi. We are bringing back Hayden Christensen to reprise the role of Darth Vader. We couldn't tell the story of Obi-Wan Kenobi without addressing Anakin or Vader. This is quite a dark time that we're coming into with him. Just being a Jedi is not safe. There are Jedi hunters out there. That's the starting place for our story; the interesting thing is going to be where it goes from there."
When talking about the reunion of McGregor and Christensen, Kathleen Kennedy shared, "The thing that was most exciting was being on the set and watching the two of them get excited. They hadn't seen one another in a long time. I was surprised at just how incredibly emotional it was for each of them to find themselves back in these roles, and just realizing how important Star Wars was to each of them. It was the beginning of their careers."
The series also stars Joel Edgerton, Bonnie Piesse, Moses Ingram, Kumail Nanjiani, Indira Varma, Rupert Friend, Sung Kang, Simone Kessell, and Benny Safdie.
Hossein Amini (Drive, McMafia) and Joby Harold (John Wick 3, Awake, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword) wrote the show.
