THE SUPER MARIO GALAXY MOVIE Teased by Jack Black as a Win for Nintendo Fans
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is still more than a year away, but Jack Black is already dropping just enough info to get gamers fired up. The actor is back as Bowser in the upcoming animated sequel, and while he’s keeping details locked down, he made it clear that longtime Nintendo fans are in for something really cool.
Black recently spoke about the project while promoting other work, and even under strict secrecy, his excitement came through. Fans of Super Mario Galaxy in particular should pay close attention. According to Black, the filmmakers have gone deep into the DNA of that beloved game and translated it to the big screen with care.
“I am a sworn to secrecy, but there’s tons of Easter eggs, and anyone who loves that universe will be very pleased with the way that it’s been brought to the big screen,” Black told GamesRadar+.
Fans of the game are sure to notice everything that they throw into this things, from background details to musical cues, and Black’s comments suggest the creative team leaned into that attention to detail.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is scheduled to hit theaters on April 3, 2026, and it brings back much of the core cast from the previous film. Chris Pratt returns as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy voices Princess Peach, Charlie Day is back as Luigi, Keegan-Michael Key returns as Toad, and Kevin Michael Richardson reprises Kamek.
The sequel also adds some exciting new faces as well. Brie Larson joins the cast as Princess Rosalina, a fan-favorite character from the Galaxy games, while Benny Safdie steps in as Bowser Jr.
Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic are directing the film from a script written by Matthew Fogel. The film is produced by Illumination in partnership with Nintendo, co-financed by Nintendo and Universal Pictures, and will be released worldwide by Universal.
The confidence surrounding the sequel makes sense given the massive success of the 2023 Super Mario Bros. Movie. That film pulled in $1.36 billion globally, making it the third-highest-grossing animated movie of all time. It also dominated the Easter box office with a $166.4 million domestic opening weekend, second only to Batman v. Superman for the holiday.
With that track record and Black promising a faithful take on one of Mario’s most iconic games, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is shaping up to be a big-screen event that audiences and fans will enjoy.
