THE X-FILES Star David Duchovny Says Series Creator “Foresaw” Conspiracy Culture Taking Over

David Duchovny recently reflected on his time starring in the hit sci-fi series The X-Files, and about how the show’s creator, Chris Carter, was “almost clairvoyant” of how he saw where conspiracy culture was headed.

When talking about this, the actor explained: “Mulder’s way of looking at the world was through conspiracy and that was the fringe at that point. It doesn’t seem to be so fringe anymore. It’s really the world that Chris Carter foresaw happening almost 30 years ago.”

When it comes to some of the conspiracies that are spreading around thanks to social media, Duchovny isn’t buying into it.

He goes on to say that he thinks conspiracies to be “mostly just lazy thinking,” I get that a lot of conspiracies out there are ridiculous, but at the same time, there were a lot of conspiracies laid out in The X-Files that actually turned out to be true.

It’s pretty wild when you go back and watch the show now because as you watch it you see all of the things that have actually been revealed and proven to be true since the show ended.

He also explains that he’s not really like Agent Mulder at all. When asked about that, he said: “Not at all. I’m an artist — I am associative-based and I see poetry as science and science as poetry.”

That’s definitely something an artist would say.

I have no idea if we’ll ever see Duchovny back in the role of Fox Mulder, but the actor previously said that he’s always up for more!

He said: "I thought the first seven years were enough! But I'm always up for more, clearly. Someone sent me a clip of Joel McHale from the 2016 episodes we did and it's a spot-on description of where we're at six years later.

“I don't think [X-Files creator] Chris Carter gets enough credit for being [prescient]. Forget about the ins and outs of plots and who gets pregnant or who gets shot. I mean, every show turns into a soap opera, so you have limited options. People are going to die or get pregnant or go to prison, right? Or become president.

"I think it's a little bit in the weeds to worry about characters' fats, when you realize that Chris somehow made a show in 1993, and again in 2016, that predicted what 2022 would be like. If he wanted to do more, I'd certainly listen to him.

“I'd say, 'What have you got?' Because I want to know the future, too, you know what I mean? And not denigrating Gillian [Anderson]'s feelings about Scully being pregnant or the character. I certainly had misgivings about my character throughout the run.

“It's the nature of a long-running thing. But to take the long view, what the show is able to embrace thematically is really the key to its longevity, and if we were to do it again, it's just a question of: 'What have we go [sic] to say?'"

When previously talking about the possibility of more X-Files Carter said: "I think that certainly The X-Files has more life in it, there are more stories to tell, with Gillian or without. I'm sorry to see her go, I've never actually considered doing this show without her, so is this the end?

“It's the end of something, I don't know if it's the beginning of something new. But certainly, we will have to all put our heads together and figure out where to go from here."

As of right now, Ryan Coogler is developing a revival of The X-Files, and we’re just waiting to see what that ends up being.
