There Was a TRON Series In Development at Disney+ But It Was Scrapped
I’ve got some crappy news for all you Tron fans out there. John Ridley (American Crime, Guerrilla) was developing an unannounced Tron series for Disney+, but unfortunately, according to THR, it was scrapped.
I don’t know what Disney’s problem with Tron is. We almost got a sequel to Tron: Legacy until some suit at the top killed it! I loved Tron: Legacy, and I really wanted to see that story continue! Now, it’ll probably never happen, and I hate that.
There are no details on what the series would have entailed. We don’t know if it would have been a reboot of the franchise or a continuation of the film series. We don’t know if it would have been live-action or animated. Regardless, as a huge fan of Tron, I would have loved to see whatever it was get made! I just want more Tron in my life!
About a year ago, Tron producer Justin Springer was still holding out for hope that a Tron: Legacy sequel would happen, saying:
“Look, I will never stop being interested in making a TRON movie. I love the opportunity to do it. It’s a title that never really goes away internally. There’s always people around the company who like it a whole lot. And so, we’ll see what happens. It would be great to get the opportunity to do it again. It’s interesting – what I will say is that I think it continues to be relevant both in its ideas and also just the visual iconography of it. I think people are still are interested in it and it still feels contemporary to me. So it’s just about finding the right time, right script, and the right people at the studio saying “yes.” You know, just the usual.”
We just need those people interested in making the project to be moved into positions to push the project forward and make it happen! Director Joseph Kosinski previously talked about the story for the sequel, saying:
"The movie was called, 'TRON: Ascension'… What I’m excited about is the concept, which is an invasion movie from inside the machine coming out as opposed to one we’ve usually seen. So we hinted at that at the end of Legacy with Quorra coming out, but the idea for Ascension was a movie that was, the first act was in the real world, the second act was in the world of TRON, or multiple worlds of TRON, and the third act was totally in the real world. And I think that really opens up, blows open the concept of TRON in a way that would be thrilling to see on screen. But there’s also a really interesting character study in Quorra and a 'Stranger in a Strange Land,' trying to figure out where she belongs having lived in the real world for a few years, and where does she fit in."
He went on to explain what Quorra would have been able to do in the real world as the first digital human hybrid:
"I don’t see them having superpowers. I don’t see them being able to shoot lasers from their eyes or do what I would consider to be a superhero-type movie. But in her DNA itself, her being the first digital-human hybrid, there’s something in her being that allows objects from inside the Grid to exist in the real world and makes them permanent, so that was the idea. So I think the idea is strong, it’s just a matter of the right time and the right place and the stars aligning as they have to do for movies."
Damn… I want to see this movie get made! Come on Disney! Someone over there has gotta make this happen!
