Thomas Haden Church Has Had Talks with Marvel and Sony About Returning to Play Sandman
Regardless of what you think about Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3, Thomas Haden Church was perfectly cast in the role of Flint Marko, a.k.a. Sandman. His performance was great, and his story arc was one of the best parts of the movie. In fact, that movie’s story should have focused on him and Spider-Man, but Sony Pictures wanted to throw in Venom and Goblin, which cluttered the story. I just thought there was so much weight to the tragic story of the Sandman.
The character did return for Spider-Man: No Way Home, but Church was never on the set of the film. Sandman was solely a CG creation, with a digital double spliced in for the character’s final transformation from previous footage that was shot for Spider-Man 3.
Well, Church recently revealed in an interview that he has actually had conversations with Marvel and Sony about returning to the role of Sandman at some point! He has specifically talked to producers Amy Pascal and Kevin Feige! While talking to DisInsider, Church said:
“I would say that conversations have been had about the possibility of Sandman coming into an a future iteration of it. The conversation has happened about him coming back, and maybe picking up a more fulfilling story.”
He also revealed that there was initially a bigger story arc for Sandman in No Way Home, which could have been explored further in a future project, saying, “We had a whole story involving his daughter, for No Way Home. And it just ended up [cut].”
Now, just because Church is talking with Feige and Pascal about returning to the role of Sandman doesn’t mean it’s going to happen. But, if it did happen… that would be awesome! I’m all up for seeing Church return to the role of Sandman!
I’d also love to see another Spider-Man film that centers on Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parker and Andrew Garfield’s Peter Parker! The fans would love to see that as well! I just have no idea if Marvel and Sony will ever attempt to develop multiple live-action Spider-Man movies.
