Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man Roles in AVENGERS: SECRET WARS Might Be Wildly Different Than Expected
The multiverse isn’t done playing with Spider-Man just yet. A new wave of reports is shedding light on how Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield could fit into Avengers: Secret Wars, and it sounds like Marvel may be taking their stories in two very different directions.
If these details hold up, Garfield’s Peter Parker might finally get a moment fans have been waiting years to see.
According to insider MyTimeToShineHello, “Andrew Garfield will get to fight an alien in Avengers Secret Wars.” That may sound like a small detail, but longtime fans will remember Garfield’s Spidey openly wishing for exactly that kind of showdown in Spider-Man: No Way Home. It’s a payoff that’s been sitting there, just waiting for Marvel to cash in.
The same insider also revealed that “Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield will both return in Avengers Secret Wars but this time they’ll be separated.”
That’s an interesting shift considering how much of the appeal in No Way Home came from seeing the Spider-Men interact. Splitting them up could mean each version of Peter Parker gets a more focused story within the larger chaos of the multiverse as they interact with other characters.
Garfield, of course, has become something of a professional misdirection artist when it comes to Marvel secrets. Before No Way Home, he repeatedly denied being in the film, only to swing in and steal the show.
This time around, he’s sticking to his story. When asked about returning in upcoming Marvel projects like Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Avengers: Doomsday, he shut it down hard, saying, “No, unequivocally f—ing no”. Current reports seem to back that up.
But when the conversation shifts to Secret Wars, things get a little more playful. In an interview with MTV, Garfield teased fans with just enough ambiguity to keep speculation alive. “See, what it is, is this a tell? Or what is it? You’ll find out!” he said. “Whatever response I’m having, is it exasperation? Is it? I don’t know. You’ll find out.”
At this point, Garfield knows the Spider-Man questions aren’t going anywhere. He even joked about it while talking to Heart radio, saying, “I think it’s a question that’s probably going to follow me for the rest of my life.”
He added that fans will likely still be asking him about Spider-Man when he’s 90, which honestly doesn’t feel that far off from reality, because the movie industry press is crazy. They can’t stop asking him a about it!
With Avengers: Secret Wars set to hit theaters on December 17, 2027, it’s shaping up to be the grand finale of the MCU’s Multiverse Saga.
Between that, Brand New Day arriving July 31, and Doomsday landing December 18, Marvel is doing some big exciting things and fans are hoping they actually pull it off. And if Garfield really does get that long-awaited alien fight while Maguire’s Spidey takes a different path, fans could be in for something pretty awesome.
