Tom Holland Says Spider-Man's New MCU Suit Is a 'Spider-Child' of Three Spider-Men
Tom Holland has shared some cool new details about the redesigned Spider-Man suit in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and it turns out the costume is much more than just a fresh look for the MCU hero.
It's actually a tribute to the two other Spider-Men that Peter Parker fought alongside in Spider-Man: No Way Home.
One of the biggest highlights of No Way Home was seeing Tom Holland, Tobey Maguire, and Andrew Garfield finally share the screen together. That adventure clearly left its mark on Peter Parker, and now it's influencing the next chapter of his journey in a very visual way.
Speaking in a newly released behind-the-scenes vignette, Holland explained how the creative team approached designing the new costume:
"When we decided we were going to make Spider-Man: Brand New Day, we said: 'What if we made a suit that was an homage to Tobey [Maguire] and Andrew [Garfield's] designs?' Because my Peter Parker had met those guys.
"We created a 'Spider-Child' of all three costumes. Everything had to fit in the world of Peter Parker and we went back to that dumpster-diver kid [from Spider-Man: Homecoming]."
It's a fun concept because it makes sense from a story perspective. Peter actually spent time with both of those Spider-Men, learned from them, and formed a bond with them.
Instead of simply creating another brand-new costume for the sake of it, the filmmakers found a way to let those experiences carry over into Peter's next chapter.
The new suit reflects that inspiration in several ways. Fans will immediately notice the raised webbing, which recalls Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy, while the larger chest emblem and more defined side detailing feel reminiscent of Garfield's Amazing Spider-Man costume.
Of course, the redesign wasn't just about paying tribute to the past. Destin Daniel Cretton also wanted the suit to feel more grounded and believable on screen.
He explained: "We are embracing the folds and wrinkles when it moves. You can see the human beneath the material."
Spider-Man has always worked best when Peter Parker feels like an ordinary kid carrying an extraordinary responsibility, and allowing the suit to move naturally helps reinforce that idea.
The costume also arrives at a fitting point in Peter's life. At the end of Spider-Man: No Way Home, the entire world forgot who Peter Parker was, leaving him completely alone as he started over from scratch.
Brand New Day picks up after those events with Peter facing a mysterious new villain, although Holland has teased that the movie's true Big Bad is still being kept under wraps.
Peter also has plenty of other problems headed his way. Jon Bernthal joins the film as the Punisher, Mark Ruffalo returns as Bruce Banner, Jacob Batalon is back as Ned Leeds, and Zendaya returns as MJ. Then there's Sadie Sink, whose mystery character continues to fuel speculation, with many fans wondering if she could actually be Jean Grey.
With a fresh suit inspired by all three cinematic Spider-Men and a story that promises to push Peter into another challenging chapter of his life, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is shaping up to be one of the MCU's most anticipated movies.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day swings into theaters on July 31.
