Tom Holland Teases a More Emotional, Grown-Up Story in SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY

The next chapter in Peter Parker’s story is shaping up to hit a little harder. Spider-Man: Brand New Day is gearing up to take the franchise into more emotional territory, and according to Tom Holland, this one isn’t pulling any punches when it comes to consequences.

Holland appeared virtually at CinemaCon to introduce new footage from the upcoming Marvel film, and while details are still tightly guarded, what he shared gives a pretty clear idea of the tone. This isn’t just another friendly neighborhood adventure, it’s a story about loss, identity, and the cost of doing the right thing.

Reflecting on where things left off after Spider-Man: No Way Home, Holland reminded everyone just how much Peter gave up. "Peter had to make a sacrifice to make all his friends forget who he is," Holland explained. "Here, you’ll see some of the consequences of that choice."

That emotional fallout is the front and center in the footage shown at the event. The scene that was shown follows Peter trailing Ned into a packed college party. Ned, played again by Jacob Batalon, starts loudly talking about wanting to figure out who Spider-Man really is because he "saved me and my friend’s lives in high school."

Meanwhile, Peter spots MJ, played by Zendaya, and It gets awkward. Peter approaches her, but instead of revealing who he is, he introduces himself as "Maynard … just a neighbor from across the hall." He hands her flowers, and MJ responds with a smile and a simple, loaded line: "friendly neighbor."

It’s a small moment, but it says a lot about where Peter’s head is at and how alone he’s become. She’s moved on and Peter sees that she’s got a new man in her life and when he sees them kissing, he gets super anxious and leaves the party.

Even though the footage hasn’t been released publicly, parts of it have already shown up in the first trailer. This story is digging into the aftermath of Peter’s choice and how it reshapes his life moving forward. While the spectacle is there, the story is more about the emotional weight he carries.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day swings into theaters on July 31.
