Universal Reportedly Wants Dwayne Johnson for THE MUMMY 4 and a New SCORPION KING Movie
Universal Pictures is clearly looking to lean back into franchise power, and all signs point to the studio wanting a major star involved as The Mummy prepares to rise again. The long-running adventure series led by Brendan Fraser is reportedly moving toward a fourth installment, and a familiar character from the franchise’s early days could be coming with it.
According to online scooper Daniel Richtman, Universal Pictures has its sights set on Dwayne Johnson returning as Mathayus, better known as the Scorpion King. Richtman claims the studio is trying to lock Johnson into more than just one project, with plans extending beyond a single appearance.
“Universal wants The Rock back for a new Scorpion King, and they also want him in the next Mummy movie for at least a cameo,” he noted in his update.
While the report doesn’t clarify how large Johnson’s role in The Mummy 4 would be, the suggestion of a cameo alone is enough to get fans talking. Universal also appears interested in launching a fresh take on The Scorpion King, potentially giving the character a modern reboot with Johnson once again at the center.
The timing lines up with Johnson’s own recent comments about the role that helped launch his acting career. The actor made it clear that he hasn’t closed the door on Mathayus.
“I don’t know. I’m always open. To be clear, that is Brendan Fraser’s franchise. I love that man. He’s one of my great supporters. We support each other, and if they want to call the Scorpion King, I know a guy who knows a guy…I would certainly consider it. Yeah, because also, that franchise changed my life.”
Johnson first appeared as the Scorpion King in The Mummy Returns, where his character served as the film’s main villain. The performance made an impact with audiences and quickly led to a solo spin-off.
The Scorpion King hit theaters the following year and became a foundational step in Johnson’s transition from wrestling superstar to global movie star.
For now, Universal is keeping official details hidden away in the tomb. But, it has been confirmed that Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz will return to The Mummy franchise as Rick and Evelyn O’Connell.
The Mummy 4 will be directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the filmmaking duo known collectively as Radio Silence. Their resume includes Devil’s Due, Ready or Not, Scream (2022), Scream VI, and Abigail.
Now, with Universal reportedly pushing for a multi-picture deal with Johnson, the sands may finally be shifting toward a full-fledged revival of the franchise. If it comes together, fans could be looking at a reunion that blends legacy characters with blockbuster ambition in a big way.
