Zack Snyder Isn't Interested in a Theatrical Release For His REBEL MOON Films
After the first trailer was released for Rebel Moon a lot of fans took to social media saying that they would love to see the movie get a theatrical release. The movie is said to be getting a limited release, but it turns out that director Zack Snyder isn’t even interested in a theatrical release for this movie.
The reason for his disinterest is because of the extended cuts of the films that he’s also released. During an interview with Polygon, the filmmaker explained:
“With this, I was not super interested in a theatrical release, especially with the PG-13 versus extended cuts. I feel like with the theatrical release, the way the model is, it takes some energy out of it.”
But, the experience of watching an epic sci-fi film like this on a big screen in a theater filled with fans is definitely appealing to a lot of people. The movie looks like it was made to be seen on the big screen! I don’t know, I just like watching movies in theaters. I enjoy that experience, I’ve enjoyed it since I was a kid. Snyder went on to say:
“My big fans would say, ‘Why are they f**king with you? Just do [the extended cuts]. In the initial conversations with Netflix, they made it a part of the plan.
For me, with my drawings, there ends up being a lot of that to tell a deeper-dive story. With director’s cuts I’ve done in the past, in a vacuum, it’s how the movie would exist. It’s part of my relationship with fans.”
The story follows a group of ragtag rebels who rise up to fight against a giant, evil Empire. It’s set in a “peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy that finds itself threatened by the armies of the tyrannical Regent Balisarius. They dispatch a young woman with a mysterious past to seek out warriors from neighboring planets to help them take a stand against the Tyrant.”
The movie stars Charlie Hunnam, Bae Doona, Djimon Hounsou, Ray Fisher, Jena Malone, Ed Skrein, Stuart Martin, Cary Elwes, Corey Stoll, Michiel Huisman, Anthony Hopkins, and Alfonso Herrera.
Rebel Moon Part 1: A Child of Fire hits Netflix on December 22.
