Zack Snyder's REBEL MOON Gets Eight Cool Photos with New Details on What to Expect
If you’re excited about Zack Snyder’s sci-fi thriller Rebel Moon, Vanity Fair has released eight new cool photos for you to check out! The photos feature several of the characters and settings from the story, and the visuals are pretty awesome. We also have lots of new details to share with you, and you can definitely see the heavy influence of Star Wars in it!
The story is set in a “peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy that finds itself threatened by the armies of the tyrannical Regent Balisarius. They dispatch a young woman with a mysterious past to seek out warriors from neighboring planets to help them take a stand against the Tyrant.”
So basically, a group of ragtag rebels rises up to fight against a giant, evil Empire. That doesn’t sound familiar at all! Snyder talked about what makes Rebel Moon different from Star Wars, which originated from an idea he pitched to Lucasfilm years ago. He said:
“This movie was me going, ‘Of course it’s a space opera, but let’s not lens it that way. Let’s lens it in a more intimate way, so that the sci-fi elements feel more grounded.’ We’re not always saying, ‘Look at how big our spaceships are or how weird our planets look!’ That happens, but it happens as an organic part of the world you’re in. You’re there, and so the things you see on that journey are not forced upon you or spoon-fed to you.”
One of the starships that will be featured in Rebel Moon is called The King’s Gaze, and Snyder describes that ship:
“That ship is a world destroyer. There’s, like, 8,000 soldiers on that ship. They’ve got, like, 200 dropships and 100 tanks, and it has this huge boom-boom howitzer. It could raze the surface of a planet. If they just fired on a planet for three days straight, there’d be nothing left. They do that a lot.”
It’s not really hard to see see how much this movie was influenced by Star Wars. Snyder did previously say: “This is me growing up as an Akira Kurosawa fan, a Star Wars fan. It's my love of sci-fi and a giant adventure. My hope is that this also becomes a massive IP and a universe that can be built out."
In case you’re wondering if there’s going to be any lightsabers in the movie the answer is no… because there are flaming swords! These swords are wielded by a character named Nemesis, who’s played by Doona Bae. Snyder talked about those swords saying:
“These swords are powered by the gauntlets that she holds. The gauntlets are these ancient [artifacts] from her home world, and part of the rite of passage of being a warrior in her world is you have to cut your arm off, and then you put these kind of robot arms on. That allows you to wield these molten-metal blades.”
Snyder also shared some details about the Imperium’s nightmarish Hellraiser-type scribes in the movie saying:
“Their purpose is, they write down information. But instead of text, they use living human beings as their paper and implant memories and images into them... You are put in stasis if you’re a page, and your body just becomes like a hard drive. The Scribes have the ability to transfer what they see, [but they’re] manipulated by politics, and they write down only what they’re supposed to.”
Damn! Look, I know that there are a lot of similarities to Star Wars, but I’m still excited to watch these films! You can read up on a lot more information at Vanity Fair. The two movies will get both a regular film that everyone can watch and extended R-rated cuts for those people looking for something a little more hardcore.
The movie also stars Sofia Boutella, Charlie Hunnam, Doona Bae, Djimon Hounsou, Ray Fisher, Jena Malone, Ed Skrein, Stuart Martin, Cary Elwes, Corey Stoll, Michiel Huisman, Anthony Hopkins, and Alfonso Herrera.
Rebel Moon Part 1 is set to arrive on Netflix on December 22.
