Zack Snyder's Two REBEL MOON Sci-Fi Films Will Each Get an Extended R-Rated Cut
Zack Snyder has been hard at work developing his two-part Rebel Moon sci-fi epic for Netflix, and it turns out that each of those films is also going to get an extended, R-rated cut. This bit of new information comes from Andy Koyama, who is working on the sound for the film. During an interview with /Film, Koyama shared that there will be four films in total:
"We just did the first temp mix for the preview of part one, and it's very exciting. It's a big, huge, space – they probably don't want me to say this – 'Star Wars'-y, 'rebels against the evil empire' thing over all sorts of different worlds. It's really fun.
"There's going to be two films. I think we're mixing that from June to February. And there's also going to be extended R-rated versions of each of the two films, so we're going to be mixing four different features."
So, that will be fun to see! I like that Snyder is doing two extended R-rated cuts to go along with the regular cuts.
The story is set in a “peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy that finds itself threatened by the armies of the tyrannical Regent Balisarius. They dispatch a young woman with a mysterious past to seek out warriors from neighboring planets to help them take a stand against the Tyrant.”
Snyder previously talked about the project, saying: “This is me growing up as an Akira Kurosawa fan, a Star Wars fan. It's my love of sci-fi and a giant adventure. My hope is that this also becomes a massive IP and a universe that can be built out."
Rebel Moon star Cleopatra Coleman (Dopesick and Infinity Pool) also talked about the film, and while she couldn’t say much, she did say that the upcoming sci-fi movie was beautiful and epic and also revealed what it's been like working with Snyder. She said:
"There’s really not much that I can say, but I will say that Zack is another director that really enjoys what he does. He comes at it with such enthusiasm, he’s camera operating, he’s in the trenches with everyone, and it’s a fantastical world that he’s created. I think people are gonna really love the action. The actors worked extremely hard on the stunts and it’s going to look really beautiful. It’s gonna be epic. That’s all I can really say. I can’t give it away."
The movie also stars Sofia Boutella, Charlie Hunnam, Doona Bae, Djimon Hounsou, Ray Fisher, Jena Malone, Ed Skrein, Stuart Martin, Cary Elwes, Corey Stoll, Michiel Huisman, Anthony Hopkins, and Alfonso Herrera.
Rebel Moon centers around a peaceful colony at the edge of space whose lives are turned upside down when they're attacked by the armies of a brutal dictator. The colony sends Kora, played by Sofia Boutella, as an envoy to seek help from neighboring planets. The ensemble cast also includes Charlie Hunnam, Anthony Hopkins, Corey Stoll, Djimon Hounsou, Cary Elwes, Jena Malone, Doona Bae, and Ray Fisher.
The movie started life as a pitch for a potential Star Wars film, with the idea of being Snyder's darker take on the galaxy far, far away. Nearly 10 years later, the movie is now coming to Netflix. As well as directing, Snyder wrote the script with Army of the Dead co-writer Shay Hatten and 300 co-writer Kurt Johnstad.
Rebel Moon Part 1 is set to arrive on Netflix on December 22.
