LOGAN Villain Revealed: Here's Who Will Be Going Up Against Wolverine
We finally know who will be squaring off against Wolverine in Logan, the upcoming superhero film that marks Hugh Jackman's last time playing the beloved X-Men character. Back in April, we learned that Narcos star Boyd Holbrook had been cast as a villain described as "a relentless, calculating and intense head of security for a global enterprise," but we weren't sure exactly which character he'd be playing. Now the secret is out, thanks to the film's newly-official Instagram account called wponx:
That's "Pierce" as in "Donald Pierce," a character THR does a great job of summing up:
In the comics, Pierce is a cyborg who has ties to The Hellfire Club, a shadowy group of wealthy and powerful individuals who seek to gain power and influence across the world. They were portrayed in 2011's X-Men: First Class, where they were led by Sebastian Shaw (Kevin Bacon). A key part of Pierce's modus operandi: creating an army of cyborgs called Reavers (who have been rumored to be in Logan).
There are a ton of comic stories that include Pierce from which to draw, and it'll be interesting to see which aspects of the character they retain for this movie. Director James Mangold seems intent on making a relatively realistic, R-rated movie here, so will he give Pierce the full range of cyborg abilities or just nod to them in some small way? I imagine he'll need a considerable amount of strength to go up against Logan...but then again, if the title character is really as broken down as early plot rumors indicate, maybe he won't have to be an all-powerful badass for their eventual conflict to be a fair fight.
Logan slashes its way into theaters on March 3, 2017.
