Actor Tom Brittney Says He Accidentally Tore Henry Cavill's SUPERMAN Suit When Auditioning for James Gunn

Most Hollywood actors have a long list of auditions that didn’t go their way. Usually it’s because they just weren’t right for the role, but not many people can say it went belly up because they accidentally tore Superman’s suit.

That’s the story for actor Tom Brittney, who says things went awry when he auditioned for James Gunn to play the Man of Steel in Gunn’s upcoming Superman.

Brittney revealed during his appearance on the Hellish podcast (via SuperHeroHype) that he was one of the actors who tried out for the Superman movie and got the chance to audition in a Superman suit previously worn by Henry Cavill.

He spoke about the experience and expressed his fear that he might have torn it. “It was actually Henry Cavill’s Superman suit – it was his actual suit.

“Apparently, he was surprised to find that the suit was a bit tight for him. Brittney, who is an inch taller than Cavill, elaborated, “It takes about half an hour to get into it – to get sewn into it.

“And yeah, I think I might have accidentally ripped it. I was more muscular than Henry Cavill, that’s the only reason.”

He follows in a long line of actors who’ve screen tested in costumes from previous projects. Cavill himself did the screen test for the DCEU Superman in the suit that Christopher Reeve wore during his original films.

Cillian Murphy, who screen-tested for Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight movies, auditioned to play Batman in Val Kilmer’s Batman Forever suit.

It must be a lot of pressure and a huge honor to wear an iconic costume like that, then accidentally put a tear in it! But it sounds like a someone was on hand to get him into and out of the suit that could repair any damage done, so that’s a relief.

As we all know by now, David Corenswet ended up landing the role of Superman/Clark Kent in James Gunn’s upcoming film, and he is joined by and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, as well as Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor; Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern; Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl; Edi Gathegi as Michael Holt / Mr. Terrific; Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen; María Gabriela de Faría as Angela Spica, aka The Engineer; Sara Sampaio, as Eve Teschmacher; and Terence Rosemore as Otis.

Superman is slated to premiere in U.S. theaters on July 11, 2025.
