Before Being Cast in SUPERGIRL Matthias Schoenaerts Was Zack Snyder's Second Choice For Batman
It was recently announced that Matthias Schoenaerts was cast as the main villain in DC Studios’ upcoming Supergirl movie, joining House of the Dragon‘s Milly Alcock, who is taking on the title role.
This isn’t Schoenaerts first brush with DC as he was up for the role of Batman in Zack Snyder’s DCEU. In fact, had Ben Affleck passed on the role, the part would’ve gone to Schoenaerts.
Snyder previously talked about his Batman backup actor, saying: “I was talking to him a lot about it. He never got in the suit, but I did do a bunch of mock-ups of him, because Ben was on the fence. And I don’t blame him. Everyone should be on the fence when you’re asked, ‘Do you want to play Batman?'”
Schoenaerts would’ve made an interesting choice for Batman, but all these years later, he landed in a DC movie, and it’s sure to be a fun role for him to take on.
I did like Affleck in the role of Batman, and Schoenaerts is a very different kind of actor and Batman would’ve been so different than what we saw with Affleck. Regardless of the choice, I don’t think Snyder’s Batman v Superman and Justice League would’ve been any better.
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is being written by Ana Nogueira and directed by Craig Gillespie. It was previously explained that the movie is “based on Tom King’s wonderful comic book series that came out just last year… This is a very different type of Super Girl.”
In the story “we see the difference between Superman who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time is an infant versus super girl who was raised on a rock chip off of Krypton and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life, and then came to earth when she was a young girl and is much more hardcore. She's not exactly the Supergirl we are used to seeing.”
In the story from King’s comic: “Kara Zor-El has seen some epic adventures over the years, but she now finds her life without meaning or purpose. Here she is, a young woman who saw her planet destroyed and was sent to Earth to protect a baby cousin who ended up not needing her. What was it all for?”
Wherever she goes, “people only see her through the lens of Superman’s fame. Just when Supergirl thinks she’s had enough, everything changes. An alien girl seeks her out for a vicious mission. Her world has been destroyed, and the bad guys responsible are still out there.”
She wants revenge, “and if Supergirl doesn’t help her, she’ll do it herself, whatever the cost. Now a Kryptonian, a dog, and an angry, heartbroken child head out into space on a journey that will shake them to their very core.”
