Christopher McQuarrie Says He Doesn't Want To Let The MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE Franchise Down with DEAD RECKONING
Director Christopher McQuarrie has found himself in a position to play with awesome big-budget movies as a writer, director, and producer, and he’s been enjoying success from that. He also has a great partner with Tom Cruise and the two talents just make freakin’ awesome films together!
The two had a massive hit with Top Gun: Maverick and now they are back to make more Mission: Impossible movies with Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One and Part Two. A movie like Top Gun: Maverick is a hard act to follow, but they actually managed to pull off something special with the upcoming Mission: Impossible movie!
Regardless of that, McQuarrie is terrified of Dead Reckoning and he doesn’t want to let the franchise down after Maverick and Mission: Impossible - Fallout. He explained in a recent interview with Total Film:
“I don’t take my position for granted. I don’t take the audience’s participation for granted. When we were making Top Gun: Maverick, I didn’t take for granted that people loved that movie or that it was a 35-year-old cultural institution. I looked at it with a very suspicious and cynical eye towards Hollywood’s tendency to make it a cash grab.
“So, everything I do is to constantly check myself and remind myself that it does not matter what you did before, this is the one you’re doing now. I’m terrified of the result of Dead Reckoning, which lives in the shadow of Fallout, which lives in the shadow of Rogue [Nation], and Ghost [Protocol], and all the other movies that came before it. I don’t want to let the franchise down. I’m more frightened now than I was on my first Mission.”
Well, having already seen the movie, I will tell you that it delivers the epic greatness that fans have come to expect from the franchise. In fact, it’s the best film in the franchise and in my opinion a perfectly made franchise action thriller.
McQuarrie and Cruise pulled it off! I don’t think they have anything to worry about as they are setting the standard for making awesome blockbuster movies. Marvel Studios and DC Studios should take note if they want their franchisees to survive.
I would be more worried about the next films in the franchise because they just raised the bar to a whole new crazy level with Dead Reckoning Part One!
