Christopher Nolan Addresses Rumors That He's Directing the Next James Bond Movie
It’s been reported that Christopher Nolan has been in talks to direct the next two James Bond movies. That report says that EON and Amazon are “pushing for Nolan and that he's on board, in principle, unless his need for creative freedom isn’t met.”
According to the rumor, EON is looking to do a full reboot of the franchise for the modern era and they want Nolan to adapt some of the classic Ian Fleming novels, “in period settings, that stick close to the original source material.” The ultimate goal is for Nolan to do three Bond films, and have him on board as an Executive Producer on the franchise moving forward.
So, what does Nolan have to say about this report? In an interview with Associated Press he was asked about it and he said:
“No. Sadly no truth to those rumors, but I’m very thrilled the strike is over and we can all get back to work.”
Now, even if the rumors were true he isn’t going to come out and say they are because of any NDAs that he’s had to sign. Also, if he says something like, “I can’t talk about that” fans would just read between the lines and assume that if he can’t talk about it he must be involved. So, the only answer he could really give is No.
This is just me really hoping that Nolan is going to actually jump on board the James Bond franchise to launch the next iteration of films. But, even if he doesn’t, he’s still going to keep making great movies.
Nolan has been very vocal about wanting to direct a James Bond movie, and he previously said: “It would be an amazing privilege to do one. At the same time, when you take on a character like that you’re working with a particular set of constraints. It has to be the right moment in your creative life where you can express what you want to express and really burrow into something within the appropriate constraints because you would never want to take on something like that and do it wrong."
Nolan previously shared a few years ago that he has talked to the Bond franchise producers, saying: "I’ve spoken to the producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson over the years. I deeply love the character, and I’m always excited to see what they do with it. Maybe one day that would work out. You’d have to be needed, if you know what I mean. It has to need reinvention; it has to need you. And they’re getting along very well."
