Christopher Nolan’s THE ODYSSEY Reportedly Has a $250 Million Budget

Christopher Nolan is known for his ambitious filmmaking, but his upcoming adaptation of Homer’s The Odyssey is set to be one of his biggest and most expensive film projects.

According to the Puck Newsletter, the film has been given a massive $250 million production budget, which makes it one of the most expensive projects of his career.

This budget is in line with The Dark Knight Rises, which reportedly cost the filmmaker between $250 and $300 million. By comparison, other Nolan hits like Inception ($160 million) and Interstellar ($165 million) seem almost modest.

For perspective, Nolan’s last feature, Oppenheimer, carried a $100 million budget, which is the same as his 2017 war epic Dunkirk. Only Tenet, with its $205 million price tag, has previously crossed the $200 million threshold in Nolan’s filmography.

Nolan assembled an A-list cast for The Odessey which includes Matt DamonTom HollandAnne Hathaway, ZendayaLupita Nyong’oRobert Pattinson and Charlize Theron. Production is expected to kick off in the first half of this year, although exact dates remain under wraps.

Universal Pictures describes the film as a “mythic action epic shot across the world using brand-new IMAX technology.”

The story will follow Odysseus’ perilous journey home after the Trojan War, introducing audiences to legendary characters from Greek mythology like the cyclops Polyphemus, the sea god Poseidon, and the enchantress Calypso.

Universal obviously has a lot of confidence in Nolan and this story, and producing a mythological epic of this scale was never going to come cheap.

With cutting-edge IMAX technology and a narrative rooted in one of history’s most enduring stories, The Odyssey is shaping up to be a massive cinematic event and with a budget of $250 million, it has to be a success.

The movie is scheduled for release in July 2026.
