Daisy Ridley Talks About Why She Said Yes to Returning to the Role of Rey in STAR WARS
Last spring, it was announced that Daisy Ridley had signed on to return to the role of Rey Skywalker, which she had played in the final trilogy of The Skywalker Saga. The new movie, titled Star Wars: New Jedi Order, is being directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (Ms. Marvel) , and Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders) is writing the film. We’ve had some dodgy info regarding the project over the last several months, with setbacks regarding the script, which was due to be turned in last November, but is apparently still not finished, and the confirmation that while this was supposed to be the next Star Wars movie we were going to see, it has been bumped back for director Jon Favreau’s Mandalorian & Grogu movie, which is more on track.
Ridley has previously teased her upcoming film, calling it “not what I expected,” and “something very special,” and now she’s talking about what made her sign onto the return in the first place.
In an interview with AlloCiné (via SFFGazette.com), Ridley shared what she knows about her upcoming Star Wars movie and confirmed that the premise of the story, even without a screenplay in front of her, was enough to convince her to return as Rey.
"That was actually quite last minute. I was actually making my own film last year, and Kathy Kennedy said she wanted to have breakfast. And I thought we were just having breakfast. So there I was, having my breakfast, and she goes 'Oh, by the way, we might do another one.' And I’m like 'Okay...' So I thought about it for a little bit and once I knew what the story was and everything I knew it was something I really wanted to do. I think it’s a really fantastic exploration of the Star Wars world. It’s a really cool way of taking the story on in a bit of a different direction."
It’s cool to hear that there’s a solid original story, but it does make you wonder why nine months later, a script still hasn’t been finished. I guess we will just have to wait and see what happens.
