Kathleen Kennedy Says James Mangold's STAR WARS Movie Will Have Connective Tissue To The Rey Skywalker Movie

Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy recently sat down with GamesRadar to talk about a couple of their big Star Wars film projects. One project is Daisy Ridley’s Rey Skywalker movie that’s being developed by Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders) and director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (Ms. Marvel). The other one is the James Mangold-directed film that will explore the ancient history of the Star Wars universe and the origins of The Force.

The Rey Skywalker film follows the events of Rise of Skywalker and will focus on Rey as she builds a new Jedi Order, and it’s set during a time when the “Jedi are in disarray.” When talking about this movie, Kennedy shared some additional insight:

"I think what's always great about Star Wars is it's a big galaxy, and we're coming off what was a major war with the First Order, and now, Rey has made a promise to Luke and that's really the core of where we're going and what this story will be. And I think it offers just tremendous opportunity to introduce new characters and start with something fresh, because we culminated with what George [Lucas] was creating, and now we take all of that and move it to the next chapter."

As for Mangold's movie, it will explore how The Force was discovered! The filmmaker previously said: "It just came from me thinking about if I were doing one, it seemed to me that most of what they were thinking about doing with movies were either in the present of Star Wars or the future, and what attracted me most was the distant past and how this galaxy formed and how, more specifically, the Force was discovered." Kennedy talked about this one saying that there’s also been interest in telling this kind of story:

"That's come up a lot, from the moment I stepped in and George brought me into the company, there's been a lot of interest in that.”

While one film is set in the future and the other one is set in the distant past, Kennedy explains that there is connective tissue between the two, explaining:

"It was something that Jim [Mangold] immediately sparked to, and I think it's a really nice compliment to what we're doing with moving into the future with Rey, and then understanding a bit more of where this all came from because it will be at the heart of creating the new Jedi Order, so to get a real sense of where that might have began with the dawn of the Jedi could be pretty cool."

I just want these Star Wars movies to be great! I know it’s possible, I just want to see a Star Wars movie on the big screen again that gets me super-pumped with excitement! I want to be excited for Star Wars movies again!
