Dave Bautista Is Tired of Waiting for Netflix’s GEARS OF WAR Movie: "Come on, Netflix. Get it Together"
It’s been nearly three years since Netflix announced a live-action Gears of War movie, and if you’re wondering what’s happening with it… so is Dave Bautista. In fact, he’s done waiting and wants fans to help push Netflix to pick up the pace.
“Start an online thing about freaking Gears of War,” Bautista told ComicBook, making it clear he’s just as frustrated as fans about the lack of movement on the film. “Come on, Netflix. Come on already. It’s not like I’m not badgering them. Come on, Netflix. Get it together.”
Bautista has been campaigning to play Marcus Fenix for years. Back when Netflix first announced the movie in 2022, fans rallied behind the idea, and even Gears of War creator Cliff Bleszinski made his thoughts known, sharing on social media: “Oh and yes, Bautista as Marcus please. And a Latino actor for Dom, dammit.”
Bautista was included as a playable character in Gears 5 a few years ago and he shared a modified version of that trailer of him unpacking his armor, and that video came with the following note: “I can’t make this any easier.”
It looked like things were moving forward when Dune and Doctor Strange co-writer Jon Spaihts was brought on in 2023 to write the script. But since then? Silence. No casting news, no production updates, nothing.
Spaihts previously said: “Gears of War is one of the all-time great action games, with vivid characters, a beautifully designed world, and a combat system that drives home the lethality of war and the importance of standing by your squadmates. It wants to be cinema, and I’m thrilled to have the chance to help that happen.”
For a franchise as massive as Gears of War, which follows a squad of soldiers battling the subterranean Locust horde in a brutal war for survival, it’s wild that Netflix hasn’t moved forward on this and put it on the fast track to production.
