DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE Director Reveals There Were "Early Conversations" About What Was Off The Table For The Movie
Deadpool & Wolverine is going to be Marvel Studios' first R-Rated feature film, but that doesn’t mean they could do anything they wanted, or go all the way with some of the film’s risque jokes.
Director Shawn Levy recently revealed that there were early conversations about what could and couldn’t be in the movie, specifically mentioning “overt drug use.”
During an interview with Total Film, Levy shared: "I’m so wary of what I can say, but certainly there were early conversations about overt drug use.”
Those conversations they had ended up inspiring the creative team to put a scene in the film about it! Feige said: "And we thought that was an interesting conversation. Let’s actually write a dialogue scene about having had it."
This moment even popped up in the trailer for the film as Deadpool referred to cocaine as "the one thing [Marvel Studios head] Kevin [Feige] says is off the table."
In the scene, Deadpool chastises Blind Al (Leslie Uggams) for offering up some 'Bolivian marching powder.'
So, while there were conversations about what Levy and his team could and couldn’t have in the movie, they found a way to get around some stuff.
I’m sure there are things that were completely off-limits for this movie, but nothing that would take away from the story they want to tell. It seems like everyone on the creative team is very happy with the freedom that Marvel and Disney gave them.
Writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick previously said the studio has been “very hands off and supportive” of their vision for the movie.
Reese said: "It's almost like putting on a comfy old sweater. Marvel's really given us the support to maintain the tone and the vision that we have for it.
“They've been very hands-off and supportive, but they've also let us do what we do. So really, it's just been fun. We're mad scientists back in the laboratory again.
“Deadpool is our favorite who will always be the character I think we're most associated with, and we're very grateful for being allowed to write him again.
“So it's a blast. It's like going back to school again after having summer off. It's pretty fun."
When talking about the support they’ve received from Marvel and Disney, Reese also said: "Don't worry about that, they've been very supportive with regard to that.
“Now when it comes to a particular joke, if we cross a line, maybe we'll hear at some point, 'Maybe not that joke.' But I think they've been incredibly supportive of what we're doing, because obviously we were doing it separate from them for a long time, and I think they've seen the success and they've had their own even greater success.
“So hopefully it'll be a marriage made in heaven. But we've definitely got their support, and that's a great thing to feel."
Marvel Studios presents their most significant mistake to date – “Deadpool & Wolverine. A listless Wade Wilson toils away in civilian life. His days as the morally flexible mercenary, Deadpool, behind him. When his homeworld faces an existential threat, Wade must reluctantly suit-up again with an even more reluctantlier… reluctanter? Reluctantest? He must convince a reluctant Wolverine to – Fu-k. Synopses are so f–king stupid.”
The existential threat in the movie is Cassandra Nova, who is the evil twin sister of the X-Men's Professor Charles Xavier who poses a threat to the multiverse.
This whole story will lead to Deadpool changing the history of the MCU as he and Wolverine jump across the multiverse in a crazy adventure.
Shawn Levy is directing the movie and the confirmed cast for the film includes Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool, Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, Emma Corrin as Cassandra Nova, Morena Baccarin and Stefan Kapicic as Vanessa and Colossus, Matthew Macfadyen as a TVA Agent, and Leslie Uggams as Blind Al.
They are joined by Brianna Hildebrand and Shioli Kutsuna, who will also return to the franchise as Negasonic Teenage Warhead and Negasonic Teenage Warhead’s girlfriend Yukio. It was previously confirmed that Jennifer Garner will return as Elektra in the movie.
Deadpool & Wolverine will hit theaters on July 26th!
