It was actually a big surprise for fans to learn that Johnson was coming back especially because of the heated drama he had with Vin Diesel. Johnson first appeared as Hobbs in the fifth Fast & Furious film franchise. He ended up having a public dispute with Diesel and it pushed the two actors to part ways.
Diesel later made a public plea to Johnson to “fulfill his destiny” and return for Fast X. Johnson wasn’t happy with how Diesel handled the situation and actually slammed him for his public plea because Johnson already told Diesel no. Johnson said:
"I told [Diesel] directly that I would not be returning to the franchise. I was firm yet cordial with my words and said that I would always be supportive of the cast and always root for the franchise to be successful, but that there was no chance I would return. Vin's recent public post was an example of his manipulation. I didn't like that he brought up his children in the post, as well as Paul Walker's death. Leave them out of it. We had spoken months ago about this and came to a clear understanding."
Johnson went on to say that Diesel’s plea muddied the waters after ending his time with the franchise with gratitude. But, now he coming back to fulfill his destiny.
