THE FANTASTIC 4 Star Joseph Quinn Explains Why The Film Won't Be Affected by Superhero Fatigue
Superhero movies have had a rough go over the past few years. Things have been in a slump, but both Marvel and DC have been making big changes to correct their course and get fans excited about superhero movies again.
The Fantastic 4 star Joseph Quinn doesn’t seem too worried about his movie being affected by superhero fatigue, and says the movie is “brilliant.”
During an interview with EW, the actor was asked about superhero fatigue, and he said: “I think that with the story of the Fantastic Four, it feels like we want to get this right.”
He added: “There are aspects of it that are very different to other Marvel films. That felt very compelling to me. And again, going back to who’s involved, Matt [Shakman], of course, the director, I think is brilliant, and the cast, and I’ve read it, and the script is brilliant. It’s really brilliant. I’m delighted to have this opportunity.”
Quinn went on to reveal why he thinks Fantastic Four won't suffer the same fate as the other superhero movies, saying: “Superhero movies are movies about people, and if we’re invested in the people and the characters and the peril and the spectacle, then that’s why people go to the theaters to watch films. We’re not just in a penny; we’re in for a pound with this one. We’re going to go for it.”
Marvel fans are all hoping that The Fantastic 4 ends up being a great movie. We’ve been waiting for Marvel to get a hold of the rights so that they could finally tell this story in the best possible way.
Now that it’s happening, Marvel is in a slump, a slump that will be broken by Deadpool & Wolverine when it’s released later this year. But, there’s no doubt that some fans will still be apprehensive about the future of the genre. Marvel Studios has a lot of work to do to gain back the trust of the fans after a string of mediocre films.
Quinn went on to talk about taking on the role of Johnny Storm, saying: “I mean, you’re going to make it your own. It’s big boots [to fill].”
He added: “I knew that they’d been talking about making the Fantastic Four in the Marvel Universe for a while. I had a talk with [director] Matt [Shakman], and it was very clear with the kind of people who they were attaching to it what they were trying to do with it. There are aspects of it that are very much a singular thing and its own thing.”
The movie also stars Pedro Pascal (The Last of Us) as Reed Richards, Vanessa Kirby (Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning) as Sue Storm, aka the Invisible Woman; and Ebon Moss-Bachrach (The Punisher, The Bear) as Ben Grimm, aka the Thing.
Julia Garner (Ozark, Inventing Anna) was also recently cast and will take on the role of Shalla-Bal, who is an incarnation of Silver Surfer.
The movie is set in the 1960s, and it will be directed by Matt Shakman (WandaVision) from a screenplay by Josh Friedman, who was brought in to re-write the script originally written by Jeff Kaplan and Ian Springer.
The Fantastic 4 will hit theaters on July 25, 2025.
